In California, someone left a cage partially open and a lion got out of its cage and killed an unfortunate lady. They killed the lion.

My question is "Why?" The lion was doing what it should normally do, The lion did nothing wrong.

Report as

It is my understanding they had to kill the lion to get to the woman.

Oh, that makes sense.

I think the lion is not guilty in this case, people should not watch it for free everyday. He never wanted to be feed and watched by people in a zoo. We are the most stupid species on earth.
Report as
It is not a zoo. These are rescued cats. They didn't want to kill it but they needed to get to the lady. They tried to lure it away first.

Gator.......you are correct. I found a good link to the story. Star! :)

I see. But they should either lock the cages or gave alert to people that there were lions nearby and they should not get close! it is mistake of people, not the lion.

Annie, it is a horrible tragedy for the lion and the woman. However mistakes happen everyday. This refuge is inspected regularly and has always passed. They haven't ever been so much as fined for any infractions. Someone made a mistake and they will have to live with that. The people who work at the refuge want only what is best for the cats. You need to direct you anger at the people who continue to deal in selling these animals to people who have no idea what it takes to cars for them. It is because of these people that the refuge even has a need to exist.

everyone will not debate here and start to talk for the lion if we punished the person who make the mistake.

the lady should feel restless when someone tell that the lion was not guilty.
Report as
The person who made the mistake may be punished. We won't know until the investigation is over. No one wanted the lion hurt. It was the last resort. I know people who work with rescued exotic animals and with big cats. Believe me when I tell you, the people who do this work would give their life to save an animal.

What will the law tell If we kill a lion? Is lion's life protected by law?
Report as
It was still attacking the woman when they killed it. At that point human life, by law, is the first consideration. There are some states in the US that allow people to breed and sell lions and other big cats. Those are the laws that need to be changed to protect them. Here is your chance to become part of the political process. Write to your congressmen and senators in Washington and ask that make a bill to make it a federal offense to breed and sell these magnificent animals without strict regulations, and only to benefit the species, and not for human amusement and entertainment.
Report as
Yes, but if the lion had already left the lady or stop attacking the lady, maybe it is not so right to kill it. When I read the question, I felt that the lion was not attacking the lady when it was shot.
Report as
Sorry Annie, they shot the lion because it was the only way to get to the girl
Report as
oh I see. they can shot it in another way, just make it sleep, but maybe there is no time to prepare for that. as far as I know it is place for "rescued cats", so they should have the related guns.

They didn't want more people to get injured or hurt.

It is important that when the lion is killed, the other lions are threatened and they are afraid to kill person again. but what is the best way to do in this case? If they won't kill the lion, the lady's family will feel bad, maybe they should punish the person who made the mistake and let the lion out, and the person should compensate the lady's family.
Report as
I agree with you, they should have punished whoever left the cage open, because they took two lives away because of a stupid mistake.

I'm sure it's because the public would be outraged if the lion were not put down. I'm assuming this is a zoo. Who would want to see the lady-killing lion? Business would suffer. I'm not saying it's right.

It is not a zoo but a big cat refuge.

I see what you mean, but they didn't kill the Whale that killed his trainer a while ago. I believe it killed two people.

Honestly, I'm just trying to make sense of it. The poor lady and her family - that's hard, but killing the lion won't bring her back. The lion was just being a lion.
Report as
They should punish the zoo, not the lion, I think.

Yes, Annie, that is true. Gatorblu said it wasn't a zoo, though, but a big cat refuge.

I think it is because lions must not be expensive animals, at least in zoo terms. I mean, they didn't kill that Orca who killed its trainer.

nice. when something wrong was done, people forget to feel sorry to the lady. the lady's family should feel happy or not??

It is strange and I don't know if this kind of punishment could stop the lion to kill people. Maybe they hate the lion and use human's law to the lion.

Your asking me, if killing the lion would stop that lion from killing people? I say it would but I ask is it right?
Report as
I think if the lion has left the lady, it is not necessary to kill it. I am not sure if it is right to just shoot a lion in a mountain?

Technically thee lion was playing around & ended up pouncing on the woman playfully but the lions weight caused her neck to break since there were no traces of scratches or marks on her. Just wanted to put that out theree lol either way i think what they did to the lion was wrong.
