There is alot of talk on what a "true Christian" really is. One group of Christians will denounce another group of Christians saying that they aren't "true" simply b/c they don't believe exactly as they do. Me....? I believe that a Christian is a person that believes that Jesus Christ is their lord and savior. Plain and simple.
The word "Christian" is used three times in the New Testament (Acts 11:26; 26:28; 1 Peter 4:16). Followers of Jesus Christ were first called "Christians" in Antioch (Acts 11:26) because their behavior, activity, and speech were like Christ. The word "Christian" literally means, "belonging to the party of Christ" or a "follower of Christ." Read more: http://www.gotquestions.org/what-is-a-Christian.html#ixzz2N4DhUjk3
It has a wide range of meaning and can be answered from a variety of perspectives such as cultural, sociological, political, theological/philosophical and biblical points of view. Others have already answered that it is a person or teaching that follows the teaching and life of Jesus as Christ. There are many that claim (and reject) the term without qualifying it with it's historical root in the biblical sense and therefore the term has become deluded and confused. Having said that, even in the biblical/Christ source their is still a range of meaning which makes your question probably impossible to answer in simple terms that all Christians will agree on. It in my view should be understood as those that are ever seeking the reality of the biblical Christ and not as those that have it "all figured out".

Christians are those people who, like the White Queen can believe in six impossible things before breakfast. If you find someone who believes in all the following, they are Christians: that dead people can resurrect; that virgins can have babies; that a man can be god; that someone can be older than his mother; that someone is identical to his father, yet at the same time different; that one person can atone for sins of another, and even before the other even committed them. Oh and that there are unicorns, mermaids, and pots of gold at the end of rainbows. Oh wait, maybe not these per se, but what they do believe make just as much sense, and has just as much evidence... Christians are weird people! One more comment: Christians are NOT followers of Jesus. if they were, they would be Jewish or at the least Righteous Gentiles. Christians are followers of Paul, not of Jesus.
Christians: believe Jesus Christ is Son of God. Second Person of the Trinity. Born of Virgin Mary Incarnate(emmanuel-God with us) Lord and Savior who died for our Sins. Died /desended into hell, and rose on the third day- defeating death and Hades. Assended into Heaven and now sits On the right hand of God. the ressurection of the believer. Will one day (rapture) return for His Church( those who have put their trust in Him) And will one day return to throwSatan Into abyss for 1000 years. Jesus will Rule 1000 years in peace. Satan is looses to do battle with King of Kings(Jesus) Lord of Lords! Satan and his demons and people who follow him will be thrown into Hell forever. A new Heaven and a new Earth Will begin! NOW some denominations will vary On some details ( like baptism-dress code-speaking in tongues-worship styles- abstainance of drink etc.) But basically they need to believe these fundamentals!
