Is x+(-y) equal to x-y?

If it makes a difference, y is equal to 5, and x is not used here to represent a number. it's actually just 'x'.

Yes because a positive and a negative makes a negative

Thanks. I know how it works, but I'm still not completely at ease with negative polynomials.

Examples:
Adding & Subtracting
1) x + (-y) = x - y
2) x - (-y) = x + y
3) -x + y = y - x
Multiplying & Dividing
1) x(-y) = -xy
2) (-x)(-y) = xy
3) (-x)y = -xy
4) x/(-y) = -x/y
5) (-x)/(-y) = x/y
6) (-x)/y = -x/y
