Water is a unique molecule on Earth. Why?

What makes it so special and allows it to support life so well?

Report as

Water is unique in that it expands when it freezes rather than contracts. This means when water begins to freeze it floats rather than sinks. If it sank rivers and lakes would freeze solid in the winter and all life in it would die. Since it floats and forms an insulating barrier against the cold to the water beneath aquatic animals are able to survive the winter beneath the ice.
