do people who go to church become better or worse......?

i just went to church ( because its been awhile ) and many people just stare up and down as if guys on motorcycles aren't aloud in church or something ... said my prayers and left this disappoints me.... we are all human what gives some people the right especially in church to judge others based on what we wear or look ... thats why i don't go to church i pray in my own way.... what your opinion on this.....

Report as

Don't ever forget to keep on mind who you are going to church for in the first place. The members of the congregation ??? Or .. Someone else???

Having said that .. You have to admit, that it is a little unconventional for a leather clad motorcyclist to attend Sunday service ... If you stand out .. You will get the "looks". Don't assume they stand in judgement .. They may very well be thinking ... "Hmmm, now I wish I would have to bring MY bike this morning"

lol i don't wear leather haha... Black T-shirt my gloves and helmet thats all i had and regular Levi's jeans nothing to inappropriate .... But lets just say i did wear leather is that a crime ...? Have you heard the story of the cowboy who went to church.....?
Report as
Crime? No of course not. What would be crime, would be to step into a place of worship without knowing WHY you are there.

You are there to learn and worship your God .. Not to impress anyone or to fit within the confines of what anyone else has determined "proper attire". Who cares what ANYONE else thinks ? You are not there to please THEM!
Report as
i know but i didn't feel comfortable so why stay and pretend i don't like being fake ... I cant hide that

So let me tell you the story of the cowboy......
one day on sunday there was this cowboy he went to church dressed as a cowboy hat and all.. So many of the church goers complained to the pastor so the pastor says to him i want you to go home come back next week and ask god that i said how to dress when you come to my church.... So a week passes the cowboy wore the same clothes and sat in the front so the pastor sees him and says in front of everybody there " didn't i tell you to ask god how to dress in my church ....? So the cowboy says " i did ask god and he said he never heard of your church before.......
Report as
Good story .. and I have to admit, I am probably the worst person to give advise on what to do and not to do in Church. I haven't gone to Church in years .. In fact, for very much the same reason as you. I don't feel welcome .. I don't feel that God is even there.

I am a 'rider' too .. and truth be known.. The closest I feel to God, is when I'm on my bike. Riding .. I have no other distractions around me but the incredible world He has provided us. Whether it be .. Blue sky, golden yellow wheat fields, majestic mountain ranges or just simply a majestic deer standing off in the bushes (and as a bike rider, I know YOU know ... it's at that point when I pray a little harder that that critter doesn't jump out in front of me).

Although I often give thanks for all I have been blessed with .. It's when I'm riding that I feel I have the freedom to truly connect. I don't know why .. I guess it's because I am away from the regular distractions of life .. family, work, all of my other responsibilities. It's a very spiritual place .. To me, far more spiritual than Church.

.. But that's just me.
Report as
we think alike thats the same for me... I can honestly say that you have more spiritual blessings inside of of you than most members of a church combined .... People who don't ride don't know how close we are to death every time we get on our bikes thats why we are more in touch to god even if we don't step in church.......
Report as
But Jesus said: do not forsake the assembly of believers and help the orphan and widows!
Its a command not a request!
Report as
Find me an assembly of believers .. And I'm there!

Don't not even TRY to suggest to me that EVERY church gathering has Gods favor. Throughout history the church's of every denomination have suffered the affects of corruption within itself.
Report as
Thats the thing lily people go to church and act one way but outside they are totally different people... Wheres the humbleness the love i don't see it and worse i didn't feel the spirit when i went there.... I feel it more when i pray on my own then in room full of hypocrites who think they are better them everybody else not all but many of them....

I have met some wonderful people that are very committed to church. I don't judge people, by whether or not they go to church, even though, I myself, don't believe in the church. There are some very genuine people, and some ... Well .. Maybe not so much. I choose to form my own opinions about how they conduct themselves. Its their actions, not their words that do it for me.

Indeed, some people who go and others are not. Going to church has the sole purpose of making a person seen as one who goes to church. Its purpose is to see and be seen.

It varies. I've seen people do both but because they did/didn't love God. It's not their right to judge. That's ver wrong. Don't worry about what other people think because we are not there for other people; we are there because we love God.

I know what you mean. People like that annoy me. They call themselves Christians yet sit in judgement if others. I've brought this up to a minister at one time. It's not the outside that God looks at, it's our heart. I won't go to a church where the people will judge me by what I'm wearing. The last one I went to, almost everyone was wearing jeans and a tshirt. We're judged by the content of our heart, not our closet.

I heard a cute story about a guy who shows up at church for the first time and gets uneasy about the cold stares and looks of disapproval and leaves and sits down on the front steps. God himself puts his arm comfortingly around the man's shoulder and says "Don't feel bad. I'm not welcome in their either."

People in church, or anywhere else for that matter, have no right to judge you. But this doesn't stop them from doing it. Jesus told a parable to his disciples about two men who went to the temple to pray. One was a pharisee, a religious scholar and authority, who prayed, "God, I thank you that I am better than this lowlife over here" (paraphrased). The other beat his breast and prayed "God, have mercy on me, a sinner". Jesus said the second man, not the first, would be right in God's eyes. Jesus' main complaint as you read the scriptures is hypocrisy and self-righteousness.

There are different churches. There are actually biker churches out there. You just need to find one that the people are truly walking in the Love of Christ and do not judge according to appearance. Good churches are hard to come by I will agree especially in small towns. But in the bigger cities there still are good churches out there. I'm a biker and I have no problem. However I know alot of people as well. I've been a part of a Christian Fellowship in Denver for over 15 years. But I won't lie to you I am now back in one of my hometowns that I grew up in and I'm having a hard time with the churches here. I drive 60 miles just to go to a church I know that is of God. I've been a Born Again Christian for over 30 years. Just pray that God will lead you to a good church. God Bless! Just remember one thing. There is no such thing as a perfect church because we are not perfect. Just keep your eyes on Jesus and not the people.

Hawkmann, some Christians are good people, some are nasty, self-centred judgmental creeps. You get all kinds of personality, just as you do with non-Christians and non-believers. Of course a lot of them will turn their noses up if you arrive wearing different clothes and riding a motor cycle. (It wouldn't matter to them if you'd sold all your possessions to help feed the homeless and could only afford a bike.)

It's always been like that.

Daizy and I were married one February and the following January our first baby came along. That was during our religious period and we proudly took him to church. One mealy mouthed older woman said all the right things and finished with, "And, ah, when were you married, dear?" My immediate response was, "September". And so the gossip started. We'd been at it before tying the knot. The child had been conceived in sin.

Many Christians, love scandal. It helps them to feel self-righteous.

You my dear haven't found the right church yet. Sometimes it takes many visits to different churches to find the one you like or even feel welcome in. My brother taught me that the smaller the church the more welcoming the congregation is. If it's the right fit, your church won't care how you come dressed, they'll be happy that you came. My brother is a drummer for a heavy metal band that's traveled all over the world, his band Pentagram and all it's members were welcomed with open arms to his church, my brother even sang one Sunday, so this shows you, the church your looking for is out there, it just takes a little searching to find.

i'm not christian but i know that in most group settings where a single person looks "different" some looks are bound to happen. and remember judgement can be a two way street, sometimes our expectations can make us see the things we anticipate. i admit you are probably right about the attitude you got ,but since we can't read minds it is possible some people were thinking they were happy to see you there and admired you for coming. if you have a need for G-D go any place you want, churches aren't museums for saints they're hospitals for sinners they'd be better places if that were kept in mind. good luck in your search.shalom.

The Bible tells us at 1 Timothy 2:3-4 "This is fine and acceptable in the sight of our savior, God , whose will it is that all sorts of men should be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth." Not all who claim to serve God would truly be serving him in an approved way as shown by reading Matt.7:21. "Not everyone saying to me Lord, Lord, will enter into the Kingdom of the heavens but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will." Pray for guidance. John. 5:14. Says "This is the confidence that we have toward him, that, no matter what it is that we ask according to his will, he hears us."
If you sincerely want to serve God, he will lead you to his spirit directed people.

Depends on the religion. Jesus observed: "Every good tree produces fine fruit, but every rotten tree produces worthless fruit; a good tree cannot bear worthless fruit, neither can a rotten tree produce fine fruit. Every tree not producing fine fruit gets cut down and thrown into the fire. Really, then, by their fruits you will recognize those men." (Matthew 7:17-20) He acknowledged that there is a form of worship that is negative. The form of worship that Christ instituted clearly had a positive effect on those who followed it. "The form of worship that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself without spot from the world."(James 1:26, 27) and again "Wisdom is proved righteous by its works." (Matt. 11:19) If the form of worship you follow has a negative effect on you, you are not obligated to continue. Try something else. Put Jehovah's Witnesses to the test and see if they meet the criteria.

Lol. It's a common misconception that we believe that only a set number of people are saved. God's Word sates that "Everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved."(Acts 2:21) But the Bible says that only 144,000 will go to heaven. Revelation 14:1,3 says, "And I saw, and, look! the Lamb standing upon the Mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand having his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads. " What will these ones do? Again God's Word answers, "they will be priests of God and of the Christ, and will rule as kings with him for the thousand years." (Rev. 20:6) In any government there are the officials and the beneficiaries. Who are the latter? Jesus said " Happy are the mild-tempered ones, since they will inherit the earth."(Matt. 5:5) That is what we believe.
Report as
I actually recently just heard that we believe only 144,000 will be saved. But actually, we don't. As Eric stated, only that number will go to HEAVEN. But only Jehovah God knows how many will be SAVED, (psalm 37:11)

Hope I helped!

I feel for you - it is not about the Church or place of worship - the biggest command given by Jesus Christ was for us to have LOVE among ourselves. God knows no style, color, race, clothing or looks when it comes to serving him - he is not a partial God-Acts 10:34,35 - At this Peter opened his mouth and said: “For a certainty I perceive that God is not partial, ?but in every nation the man that fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.

Please do not allow such superficial behavior discourage you from seeking out the true God - those that serve God -reflect his qualities - that of love (1 John 4:8). The above scripture does not state you have to look a certain way to be accepted. God teaches us how to serve him as we grow spiritually.
