I transferred from a 2 yr college to a 4 yr, then opted for a trade school. Can I combine all my credits and apply for an associates degree?

I started out working on an associates degree in counseling, then decided to work on a bachelors in psychology, then decided I'd prefer the medical field (indecisive, I know) so I chose to attend a school for medical assisting (because funding was almost gone). When I finish my medical assisting degree, I'd like to go ahead and get my BSN. However, with no funding left, I need it to be money conscious. Someone mentioned to me that if I had enough credits I could apply for an associates degree and then I wouldn't have to worry if the classes I had taken would transfer because the degree will transfer no matter what. Is that true? And if so, what is the first step in doing this? (When I transferred from the 2 yr school to a 4 yr, I transferred my credits at that time but could not transfer credits to the MA school).
