Is it true that having hyper extensions in the knees can cause damage to your body? (And shorten my dance career?)

They look really pretty now, but one of my friends said, "I'd hate to have hyper extensions, but they look nice for now. They'll shorten your dance career." Apparently my archy feet and hyperextensions will put stress on my joints... If you don't know what degree mine are, think Svetlana Zahkarova. My feet aren't as amazing as hers yet though!! It's not like They have to bear a lot of weight, I weigh 80 lbs. Will this shorten my dance career? I'm a student at the New York City Ballet School.

Don't worry about that friend. I think she is just a little jealous. Every dancer has a limited time to dance because it is demanding, and never knows if they will get an injury to shorten it further. But take good care of yourself and follow doctor's orders and your career will last as long as possible.
