How old should my puppy be before I can get her spayed?

Report as

When you take her to a vet and get her on paper for all shots, ask them.
Some vets suck, but I have a cat with FIV and when my first cat died, they sent out a card signed by all the employees.
They are awesome.
Another vet my mother took my dog to baked my dog without asking anything, not even sure the ashes are Goldie's, but they charged her over $100.

Is where I take my cat who I had for 17 years, since he was small enough to fit in one hand (had to pimp out that spot), sorry.

A good Vet will tell you, do some research to find the best around you.
You legally can't just toss a dead dog out with the trash, it's not a thing.
Find a good vet and stick with them, they go to school longer than doctors do.

You don't get girls spayed. They kinda need sperm 1st.

why do they need sperm 1st
Report as
Uh, no, the males get neutered, the females get spayed... WTH is up with your answer?
Report as
What are you talking about?! When you take a female animal in to the Vet to have a medical precedure done to ensure they can't become pregnant it is called having them SPAYED.

Adding sperm to the mix would end up getting them pregnant. (Which again is what we're trying to AVOID)
Report as
i was asking thedissector why they need sperm first
Report as
What! U get them spayed and boys get neutered. U get them spayed!

Nope, It's SIX months.

Any younger can be hazardous to their health.......and no Vet will do it that young.

Sorry I thought I saw on the tv it was 3 months

You will need to take her for her "puppy shots". Ask the vet while you're there. Mine was done when she was 4 months old, on the advice of my vet, and she was fine.

WHAT?!....You actually found a Vet that would do it before Six Months?!

Most Vets will tell you that can be hazardous to their health to have it done that young....and in some places you can actually lose your license to have it done that young.
Report as
Yep. This was almost 10 years ago, and 4 months was the vet's estimate of her age. She got her first checkup, her shots, I asked about spaying, and they they checked their appointments and said "how about next week?" Of course, things may have changed in the past 10+- years.

From the SPCA site:

When Is the Best Time to Spay or Neuter My Dog? It is generally considered safe for puppies as young as eight weeks of age to be spayed or neutered. In animal shelters, surgery is often performed at this age so that puppies can be sterilized prior to adoption. In an effort to avoid the start of urine marking in male dogs and eliminate the chance of pregnancy, it?s advisable to schedule the surgery before your dog reaches six months of age. It?s possible to spay a female dog while she?s in heat, but not always recommended since she may be susceptible to increased blood loss. Though older dogs can be good candidates for sterilization surgery, your vet can best determine if the procedure can safely be performed. Please check with your veterinarian about the best time to spay or neuter your pet.

Sometimes it's best to let them go through at least one heat cycle (period) and then have them spayed. But your vet can tell you their policy.

Ask your vet. Although, my males were neutered at 6 mo. As my vet suggested. You probably are doing this but get ALL her shots done. If done correctly she should be ready by then.

From what I understand, your female needs to have a couple of cycles first (being in heat) to fully develop her feminine characteristics, just be sure you keep her inside and away from any males during the cycle. After she has had a couple then have her spayed.

Not quite accurate. They can be spayed BEFORE they have any cycles.

You just need to wait until they are atleast six months old. No vet will do it before then
Report as
well if they dont have any cycles she could have some bad side effectes

Your puppy should be 6 months old and, hopefully, having never had a heat cycle before being spayed.

I'd say like 6 months to a year try to never wait more then a year though as they might start having heat and end having baby's and then it becomes a huge headache or if there males then they start spaying on just about everything

Spaying does NOT do that. Whoever made you believe that is shoving a bunch of garbage down your throat!
Report as
That has to be the silliest notion I have ever heard. Whoever told you that must be laughing themselves to death.

Spaying only stops them from having babies. It does NOTHING ELSE.

NEVER! Breeding is one of the most beautiful and amazing experiences of life, and God didn't make dogs to be spayed, he made them for the species to go on.
And if it's a French Bulldog, getting their part's taken out is like the dumbest thing to do. (The puppies can be sold for thousands of dollars.)
