What is the point of daylight savings?

Report as

The old answer was "to save energy". However, Indiana's switch a few years ago was studied and they proved that it uses more energy.

Supposedly it was to save energy by having to use the lights less by having daylight longer into the evening. I don't see how it matters if you have to turn the lights on to see in the morning.

It causes it to be brighter later so that farmers can work later

So the sun is up for a longer portion of the day giving people more time to do things. Also saves energy cause you wont need the lights until later.

but then you'd need them in the morning counteracting the energy savings in the afternoon so it does not save energy

In the morning everyone is asleep. Its light outside at 7:00 so yours still saving energy. The amount of people up at 6-7 am is a lot less then those up at 6-7 pm when it starts to get dark.

I asked my science teacher this question, and she said it is to save energy because it is light outside longer - therefore, you should use less electricity!

Changing the times of clocks does not make it lighter outside longer, only the sun can do that. And it might saver energy either later but that would cause use of lights in the morning negating the energy preservation so it does nothing

Over time congress has extended daylight savings time to cover more days of the year because they realized it stimulates the economy. Having more daylight, late in the day causes people to spend more money at stores and stimulates the economy. It is one of the ways congress can stimulate the economy without spending more money.

The original reason for daylight savings was so that police, when they rode horses, could see as they rode to work in the morning.
