Because people are people. We aren't the brightest, we aren't the best. We make mistakes and stupid decisions. Too bad the people who tend to make more stupid decisions than others get a hold of the guns. And use said guns as their force, instead of other things. I myself have been involved in Gun Violence (Though not in the USA), And it was all out of stupidity and hatred. The central cause of most violence.
Because far too many fools have gotten hold of guns, and there are far too many fools in the government who like to restrict the law abiding citizens so that they cannot defend themselves. That is your answer in a nutshell.

Cuz we have A lot of bad people with guns. Same reason they have so much knife violence in Britain. People will always kill each other. Always have, always will. The tools simply change over the years. Like asking the question "Why were so many people being beaten to death with rocks 6 thousand years ago?"
There is a lot of violence without firearms too. People want attention. People also want to hurt others because they got hurt at some point in their life. Mommy or daddy might have made them turn off the Xbox when they didnt want to.... so they go kill people. Mommy or daddy might have MADE them do the dishes.... so they go kill people.
Like tony said your statement actually isn't really true! We have very low gun violence in America. Especially when you compare the average number of gun crimes committed each day to the number of legal gun owners. (88 out of every 100 people own a gun in the US)
