How to light charcoal for barbecue?

I cant seem to get them red hot.

or better yet. Charcoal lighter fluid. Starter fluid will give the barbecue an oily or gassy taste.

Light the match and when you throw it in the charcoal with a piece of cardboard or paper start blowing air to it

You dont want them red hot... You want them to be gray.

Until I got a charcoal chimney lighter, I used kindling wood. Crunch up a piece of news paper and cover it with splinters of pine or any soft wood. When the paper catches the wood on fire, you can begin to put the charcoal over the top. The wood burns longer than the paper - long enough to ignite the charcoal. Some fanning helps to rev up the wood.
