We have a Miniature Doberman that is smart and playful, but has no problem sleeping the day away (under the covers :). And when you get home, they like to play tug and run around in big and little circles, fast! Ours eats good and never gains weight. The breed does have fragile tiny bones, but Theyer good at staying out of the way too. Also tumors, but as long as they don't grow, Theyer just fine. You wanted honesty, right? Have fun with your doggie, bye!
If you are going to be leaving it at home for such a long time maybe you should try a different pet like a cat or bunny. They don't seen to need as much attention and don't need to go out to potty or on walks.
You can always try using any of the select-dog-breed quizzes online (just google for the phrase "dog breed quiz"). The good ones will ask questions about space, activity, size, lifestyle, grooming maintenance, etc. Here's one, to try out: http://www.selectsmart.com/DOG/ Since it will be alone much of the day, you'll need (1) an independent breed that is happy to amuse itself for hours, and (2) to arrange for either a mid-day dog walker, or an access to a (secure) enclosed outdoor area for exercise/pooping-peeing.
It totally depends on... Well everything. If you want more active dogs, you can go with a rat terrier, cocker spaniel, jack Russell, or miniature pincer (to name a couple). If you want more if a lap dog you can get a Pomeranian, papillon, chihuahua, or something else. I missed a lot but, I bet it you visit your local humane society, look for ads (with back round checks!!!!!!!!!!!!), or look on petfinder.com you can find THE BEST DOGS THERE.
