I tried EVERYTHING!!! I think I "quit" about 18 times. Cold turkey did not work for me. I got the e cig a few months ago (thanks again, kuu). Once I started using it I was able to gradually decrease smoking real cigs until about 2 months ago...I realized that the real cigs were harder to smoke, tasted bad, and made me feel icky. So...for me the e cig has done the trick. At this point I cannot even stand to smell a real cig. However you decide to go about it, I wish you the best!! It is worth it to quit...food tastes better...BEER tastes better...I have MORE MONEY!!! My hair smells really good now...all the time!!! So many perks!!!
it depends on the person..if you try gradually without an aid like patch or niccoret gum for example I think it's harder. I did cold turkey once and foolishly went back. I also did the electric cig which worked well.
easier to stop smoking gradually but my fiance made me quit cold turkey... and it sucks because once you were on that schedule of having one you want one more than when you were smoking... in the process of cold turkey now.....
When a Client can assure me that they are genuinely ready to quit smoking, I ask them to throw their fags into my waste-basket. Then we have a half-hour motivational hypnotherapy session in which I reinforce their committment to end the smoking habit. Most Clients only need one session as I give them a recording of their session to "refresh" their resolve when needed, also I give a special blend of herbs (mixed nervines) to calm the nervous system for a week or so. Very few Clients need to come back and some I meet years later that are still smoke-free after one session and astonished how easy it all was to quit using hypnotherapy. I hope you have a Clinical Hypnotherapist in your area to consult....
Cold turkey worked for me. I had random people around me that smoked hardcore and instead of picking up a cigarette i started a conversation with them. Of course, I was pregnant and the last time i picked up a cigarette i almost puked when i took the first puff off it so maybe that's why i could quit cold turkey... good luck

Cold turkey is a silly name for "stopping smoking". No matter what, the other methods are something other than stopping. If you want to fool around with alternative nicotine delivery methods OK but the reality is that you are not stopping unless you quit nicotine. That is what you are addicted to. So the bottom line is that everyone who has stopped has stopped "cold turkey".
I made a choice three days ago to stop cold turkey. I think it would be harder to do it gradually almost like procaastinating in a way. So I just said I am done and havent had any cravings or anything since. I smoked maybe 3-12 smokes a day.

It really depends on the person. If you are an "all or nothing" type than "cold turkey can work better. Tapering has always worked for me. Tapering has helped me with prescription medication dependence. I am not "all or nothing".
My ex mother-in-law had success with cold turkey. She was a two pack a day smoker. An aortic aneurysm convinced her to quit.
My last quit time was 2 years ago. I am more of a "reformed smoker" now. Everytime I quit taper helped me. Also, my last quit, I used patches. My income dropped dramatically, so expense is a big factor that I do not smoke. But, a big reason that I truly believe is that I will never smoke another cig in my life is watching my brother die the most wicked death I have ever witnessed. I am a nurse, so I have seen people die. Lung cancer is a wicked death.
Again, I re-iterate, it depends on personality. I tapered gradually. Delayed gratification. Telling myself I can have one cig every two hours. Then increasing it to three, a week later, All the way to one cig.
Best of luck to anyone quitting. It took me multiple attempts.
My mum goes on a site called "fruit cigs" and she bought a vaporiser and some normal cigarette flavoured nicotine, she said it was weird at first but she never felt that she needed a fag, so then she tried all the different flavours like strawberry and apple, and it's worked, she may still be addicted but she isn't inhaling all the carcinogens and rat poisen in real ciggorettes... So I would suggest you swap to a nicotine alternative that still gives you nicotine but tastes different, then you're addicted to a popular flavour such as strawberry, and you only crave strawberries :3
You have a bunch of good answers. Here is mine: Chantix. After smoking for 30 years, I finally listened to my Doctor, and he prescribed Chantix. I never did go to the 2 grams., but after 3 weeks, a cigarette had NO TASTE. I quit after that and it's been 6 years now. I chew toothpicks! My wife smoked, too, and it killed her at age 58 from COPD and cancer. She has been gone now for 6 years, and I am 71 yrs old. I could not quit "cold", but Chantix did the trick for me. Good luck.

To quote the study summary from a study entitled, "Does how you quit affect success? A comparison between abrupt and gradual methods using data from the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Study," by Cheong Y, Yong HH, Borland R., published in Nicotine and Tobacco Research, August 2007, Volume 9(8), Pages 801-810:
"This study examined ... quitting success and relapse of adult smokers who reported quitting on their own. Data came from ... a random-digit-dialed telephone survey of a cohort of more than 8,000 adult smokers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia, with a 75% follow-up rate. The results indicated that 68.5% of the smokers who had made a quit attempt between waves reported using the cold-turkey method. Of those who used the cold turkey method, 22% and 27% succeeded at Waves 2 and 3, respectively, compared with the 12% and 16%, respectively, who used the cut-down method."
