Typically, most people won't take any notice at all.

Typically, NOTHING will happen now. We can play around on Mars and identify ancient weather records - possibly even proving that water was common on the Martian surface. But Mars lost it's atmosphere when it cooled below the temperature where it's magnetic field was active. Mars is now a dead planet, although finding any definitive sign of earlier living things would be a BIG DEAL. I reckon Martians were microbes and unlikely to have left any fossil evidence. We have found hydrated minerals, so water was definitely part of Martian history. I fully expect to find liquid or frozen water there now, but the living things question will only be answered with a manned landing. And THAT won't happen within your lifetime!!!
