What is the difference between "Fact" and "Truth"?

I understand many philosophical cornerstones that shed much light on this question, but I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Report as

Fact is Proven, Truth is Spoken.

I'd type it out, but you already said it.
Report as
How can one explain how some facts can be changed, then?
Report as
People change their minds.
Report as
ThankYou bluesun! He had me thinking for a second lol
Report as
I just didn't know how to explain it exactly lol
Report as
Facts are changed when new information is introduced to disprove a fact.
Report as
Ahh!... but by nature, facts can't be changed, can they? Or are facts based on technological advancements? ;)
Report as
When new information is introduced to disprove a 'fact' means that the 'fact' wasn't really proven a fact in the first place. So facts CAN'T be changed.
Report as
Maybe some people believe facts can be changed because what was considered a fact means that it is proven. So when it becomes "disproved" by new information, they "changed the facts" so it seems that facts can change but they don't. They just made a mistake thinking that they had actually proved the original fact when really in reality it wasn't proved at all.
Report as
I know that it is harder than we might think to actually prove something to be a fact since their maybe be variables that may affect what we think is true that we may not even know of thus making this question a very tricky question to answer.

Vox, I think I understand, fact and truth, exist absolutely, independent of what we may think or discover. If that's the case, they are the same.whether we discover them or not, I think is irrelevant.

A fact is simply a widely accepted version of the truth

The truth may not necessarily be a fact but a fact is at the current moment, the truth.

Report as
If both can be changed, how can there be pillars of fact (like "prime numbers") and other "facts" that are proven, but later revised?
Report as
Prove at the current moment. Nothing is stable.
Report as
I like that!

Fact is someone's version of idealism, that they believe to be proven by some aspect of the world. Truth, is based in the mind, truth is universal, and never changes. For instance, it was once fact that the earth was flat and the center of the universe. But it has always been truth that the earth is in fact a sphere, and not the center of the universe. In the end, fact is a subjective thing based on what one supposes to be evidence. Truth is always there, and is always the same, but is not always easily found.

Edit: as a side note, i find your username interesting, what prompted you to use the latin word for sound as a username?

Helpful (4) Fun (1) Thanks for voting Comments (15)
Report as
Vox is Latin for "voice", not "sound".

Report as
"Sound" is "sonitus".
Report as
The voice makes a sound.
Report as
That doesn't mean they are the same words. That's like saying a piano makes music so the words for piano and music must be the same.
Report as
It can also be translated to mean sound, any audible thing. Remember that the latin language was structered around the Romans, who called anything that was a sound, a voice as well, the two became interchangeable in translation. For instance, the Voice of the wind. Vox can be, and is often translated as sound.
Report as
also, why is it that you feel the neccessity to troll around and argue with everything i say?
Report as
I don't think you know the definition of the word troll.

I was simply correcting your syntax, seeing as you didn't know the correct term.

I would only point out that the statement that the earth is a sphere is still technically a fact just as the earth "was" flat. Nevertheless less your example works as an illustration how "facts" always beg for the Truth and that facts in a sense change (relative) therefore the truth must be supreme, absolute and unchangeable (universal as u say). What u think?
Report as
Essentially, that is the point, there is an equivalent exchange in all things, an aspect of yin and yang if you will. If something is changeable, there must also be a balancing force that is not changeable, and will always remain the same.
Report as
Preppy,

True, though that does not make the type of behavior acceptable.

I totally agree!!
Report as
Preppy, your obnoxious namecalling and blathering is atrocious. You intentionally spread misinformation and claim to know more that professional scientists. Fact checking isn't trolling. Skepti is right. I am a student of Latin as well. A phrase for you; curta supellex.
Report as
I am also studying latin, and have a much better one for you that you would do well to take the advice of. Tecum habita; noris quam sit tibi curta supellex

A fact can be verified. A truth, at times, can not. For example: 2 + 2 = 4. That is a fact. Anyone in any country can do the math and get the same number. The statement (2 + 2 = 4) is a fact. It is true that I saw a snake climb the tree this morning. No one was with me. It can not be verified. Even a lie detector test is not 100% reliable. It is still the truth.

Helpful (1) Fun Thanks for voting Comments (1)

And that is the truth! You can use the scientific method to verify or prove.

A fact is a statement of the way something is. The opposite of fact would be opinion. Contrary to popular belief, facts can be either true or untrue. Whether it is true or not, it is still a fact so long as it is not a question and not an opinion. Truth on the other hand is the opposite of change contrary to popular belief that it is the opposite of false. When there is truth it will never change. When there is change, you will know that there is no truth.

Example: That dog is black. This sentence is a statement of fact regardless of the dog's true color.

Example 2: That dog is cute. This sentence is a statement of opinion rather than fact.

Example 3: If someone said the statement "That is a cat" and later says of the same animal, "That is a dog", they are saying two contrary facts but at least one of the facts is not truth. This sentence is a statement of fact but is obviously not truth for it has changed. Truth is always truth, it never changes.

I would offer the perspective that facts are relative entities of perceived knowledge within time/space. They (facts) being relative to the Truth. Truth is then absolute. Facts are relative.

Facts have to have been proven. Truth can rely solely on what someone believes, because it will be 'true' no matter what the facts say.

A fact may at some point be disproven, the truth will always be the truth, even if no one believes it.

Report as
If the fact may be disproven, doesn't that mean that the fact wasn't REALLY proved to be true in the first place?
Report as
The example I am thinking about is , the world is flat, was once considered fact, the sun orbits around the earth, was considered fact.
Report as
But the truth which had always been, was eventually discovered, disproving excepted facts.
Report as
But was it really a fact just because that's what the majority of the people think?
Report as
No it was only an accepted fact. In reality , facts and truths are absolute , even if their never discovered. I think there is no difference in the two, now that I thought more about it.
Report as
Maybe. I'm still a little unsure but you might be right.

Facts can be tested or proven. Truth is simply what someone says to say they are not lying or to claim what is fact or what is false.

btw Good question!

Or to make it easier to understand... Fact is the opposite of opinion as truth is the opposite of lie.
Report as
Good answer!
To answer your question about Logic, I am all for logic as long as we don't validate logic as "true" by simply referring back to logic itself. If we do that then we are actually committing a logical fallacy known as petitio principii (begging the question). If we commit this fallacy we are in effect claiming that logic has no other basis other then itself not to mention that we contradict our self by making a logical blunder and at the same time say we hold that logic is in fact valid! So what are we to say about that? Hmmmmm....lol ;)
Report as
Sorry, this is complicated to me, lol.
Report as
Yeah, I agree! Ha ah
There's no need to analyze it to that extent, but to put it more plainly I guess it's enough to say that "logic isn't enough". It's not enough to live by, even though we use it (correctly and incorrectly) every day. I know you claim atheism, but regardless of what we believe (or disbelieve) we all put faith in things that don't function by logic alone. Oh, and to answer your first question more simply: I am for logic! ;-)
Thanks for the chat....stop by anytime and feel free to comment however u like! Peace

Hi, guys. :)
.
Alan, I'm writing a few books about psychology.
Report as
Nicce!! Will it have new information about psychology that hasn't been discovered yet?
Report as
Maybe, but a few minutes ago I found an article explaining the exact same thing I thought I discovered. Thankfully that only effects one book; hopefully it won't happen to another.
Report as
A couple days ago I heard on the radio about neuroscientists in Japan are inventing a technology that will help you learn any skill without actually having to learn it. So I could learn to play the piano in like 5 seconds. lol. And yes, I also play the piano if that's what you were wondering. lol.
Report as
And you probably don't know this right now but I kinda envy you. lol. >.<
Report as
I see that attempt a bad thing. I was already disappointed when I heard about Autotune because it discredits people who can REALLY sing; now this?
.
You play piano? Cool. Are you good at it? And lol why do you envy me?
Report as
You know, I actually didn't even think about that. You make a good point. But autotune makes people sound good. Which is how some of my favorite bands came to be. Without it, I am worthless (not being serious). I'm actually thankful about autotune for what it can do, as long as artists could make music sound good. It's good to me too, weather they could sing or not.

Well my teacher said that piano is my prodigy, so yeah I guess you could say I'm good. lol. She also said that what I learn in 2 weeks, most people would learn in months! I learned so fast it's not even funny...lol.

And I kinda envy you because.. well actually.. I always thought that you could know psychology just by observing other people (no creeper) (and no controlled group) and I was wondering if that's what you did. Like the validity effect, groupthink, confirmation bias, or knowing what makes some things funny to other people while others not, etc.
Report as
You seem really good at piano! Tell me more about your musical self. :)
.
I can do psychoanalysis and at this point I can learn psychology on my own, but I can't do any of it very quick. I may learn well but I don't learn fast. Lol.
.
Are you naming things I taught you? I don't recall the terms 'validity effect' or 'groupthink' and I learned 'confirmation bias' from Rmoran on Ask (who sadly is no longer around). But I did figure out the humor thing on my own, and I should add there's a science to it that can make anything more psychologically effective.
Report as
I hope it's not rude that all my paragraphs about myself are really long. :(
Report as
I learned to play guitar hero as my first instrument about 4 years ago. Then I learned to play the piano at my piano class (which I didn't sign up for that class in the first place. The only reason why I'm there is because I didn't turn in my selection sheet so they put me in random classes). I don't play much; 1 1/2 hrs every 2-4 days (sometimes more) for about 6 months and already know about 7 songs (including coldplay).

Yes, psychoanalysis is not easy. ha.

No, just terms things you can learn just by observing. And what science?
Report as
And no it's not rude at all. lol. your silly.
Report as
Wow you learn songs pretty fast. What level are they?
.
The science is surprise and familiarity.
Report as
Levels? Idk, I didn't know songs had levels to play. But the sheets look kinda complicated, but I'll ask my teacher to make sure.
Report as
Pianists usually just assume a level between "beginner", "intermediate" and "master" or something like that.
Report as
I think the sheets she give me are intermediate. Mostly because I'm still learning, but each sheet gets a little harder and trickier than the last.
Report as
Be happy you can read sheet music. Lol. I'm unable.
Report as
Wait, so you learned how to play by ear? And how are you unable to read sheet music?
Report as
Yes I did and I play well by ear. Sheet music just doesn't make sense to me. It's agonizing to follow.
Report as
Ha! Yes it is, lol. That's why I always bother my teacher with so many questions saying "What this?" "What's that?" "What that mean?" or "How you do that?" every 5 seconds. lol. And I still don't exactly get it. lol.
Report as
Don't you have some kind of teacher to teach you how to read?
Report as
I don't care to read sheet music. I prefer to just hear a song I like and play it right then.
.
Psychologically, do you know what it means if my performance in math and sheet music is the same, both being terrible? Lol.
Report as
I wish I could that. :/ I remember trying to do that and it wasn't easy, lol.

Anyways I have to go to bed real soon. I'm really tired. *yawns*

Okay, goodnight!
