This dog has a smelly bare/raw spot from his collar. What do i need to put on it?

My neighbor was starving and ignoring his dog. I had recently taken it in and he is not food or love deprived anymore. However, when i got the collar off his neck i noticed his hair was gone. Its bare and has a foul smell.. I believe the foul smell is from the out doors. (he is an outdoor dog and loves the mud, rain, and dirt) There is no cuts and he does not scratch it. How should i treat it? or what would sooth it? i don't know if he is uncomfortable but he doesn't even mess with it. Any suggestions? I do not want to take him to the vet since the skin is not penetrated. Any suggestions?

Change to a harness type. Make sure
It's neck is not cut or infected. Wash the neck with shampoo, rinse, and pat dry. Avoid the previous owner as anyone who would abuse a helpless animal is evil! no animal should be left outside all the time. they need to be kept comfortable and need love and human contact. it smells because it is kept outside and has mange or needs a bath. watch Animal Planet.

The neck was not cut of infected, but i did take him to the vet today. His skin was tested and she gave him antibiotics to verify if it is Mange. She also verified that the hair was gone because the owners left the same collar on him since he was a puppy. I wish more people who take better care of their animals. I could have called animal control but i chose not to in case they put him down. Its not the animals fault when the owner doesnt take responsibility! Thanks for the advice!!! He is clean as a whistle! ;)

Hydrogen Peroxide , It Could Help The Pet's Neck Be Free Of Any Bad Bacteria , I Hope This Helps , I Know This Works , Try helping Him Out By Keeping Him For A Week Or Two In Your House If You neighbor Can't Afford Maintaining Him , Because
That 's What Pets Are For :)

judging by the condition he was in you should take him to the vet for a full checkup .. they could give you better info & prescriptions & detect other things you couldnt .. if there are some

I took him to the vet today and she said there is a possibility it could be Mange but she didnt see the mites. she put him on antibiotics to see weather the spots heal up or come back. Thanks for the advice! =)

You could clean the area with surgical scrub solution like Betadine or Nolvasan. Applying antibacterial ointment to the area might also help, but you really ought to contact the vet for professional advice.

Thanks for the advice! I did take him to the vet and they said he might have Mange but she said that no mites were seen on the skin test so she started him with antibiotics to see if the hair will grow back and stay or bald again! Luckily its inherited and my other two dogs wont be affected!

Thank you for caring enough to take him in, some people would look the other way! Bless you! Some months ago you mentioned your dachshund had a lump on her belly, did you have it checked out? How is she doing?

Hi, I did take her to the vet the very next day. They told me that this lump is common in Dachshunds it was just a fatty lump. The vet said not to worry about it unless it grows. She is 7 and still doing wonderful! Spoiled rotten! Thanks for asking!
