Counting calories is a reasonable guideline to dieting, but there are flaws. One major one is water retention. Consider - that you require say 1600 calories a day, but only eat 1000 calories. It makes sense that you would lose weight right? Not necessarily. If that 1000 calories is high in sugar and salt (pasta, rice, potatoes, bread) and low in protein, you will retain water. If you drink 8 glasses of water a day.... thats 2.2 lbs of weight you could potentially gain, even though water has no caloric value.

I always suggest low carb because its worked for me. For losing weight, feeling better, getting sick less, having whiter teeth, and more. In 90 days - I lost 150 lbs, my blood pressure dropped - not just to normal levels, but excellent levels, and my cholesterol dropped (eating 50% fat and 50% protein!).

Protein causes your body to shed water, so you don't suffer from water retention, but you do have to keep sipping on water all day to keep hydrated. Also I don't count calories I eat as much meat, fish, eggs, and salad as I want.

can you tell me what carbs should I avoid?

What fruits and veggies can I eat?

Avoid ALL carbs. Its hard at first - so I find its best to plan meals a week in advance so you don't start snacking on junk food. NO junk food. A general guideline is nothing "white" - no potatoes, no rice, no pasta, no bread (there is low carb bread - but i gave up using it). No sauces, gravy's, marinades. Some things like mustard have no carbs. No fruit. Vegetables are hit and miss - you would do best to look them up. Green vegetables are generally around 5% carbs. The Atkins diet allows up to 100grams of carbs a day. I prefer the Anabolic diet - where you have less than 20 grams a day - (which is about a tablespoon of salad dressing) through the week, and on the weekend you eat whatever you want. This diet is optimal with exercise. If you don't exercise Atkins might be better for you.

Foods that are okay - all meat (at least 1 serving of red meat per day), all fish, eggs, and lettuce.

Hope this helps. Good luck :)

Then how can people lose weight?

Low carb generally amounts to low calorie. However, even if you eat NO carbs at all (bad idea, as is any extreme diet), if you take in too many calories of whatever kind, you will gain weight. Your body breaks down carbs into sugars, but it can also break down anything you eat and if you don't burn enough energy with exercise, it stores what it breaks down as FAT.

What if you eat low calorie diet but you don't workout?
Report as
If you eat less calories than your body needs for everyday living, your body chemistry will adjust as if you are starving and burn calories even slower. When you go back to eating normally, you will put the weight back even faster. BUT if you eat less calories than your body needs for every day living, but exercise even a little, your body realizes you need to burn those calories, and will keep burning them at the usual rate. When you reach the weight you want and go back to eating normally, if you continue with just a little extra exercise, you should be able to hold that weight.

It depends on how your body gains weight and loses weight.
