There's this concept of "mutual destruction". If neither side would survive, why fight the war? While we'll continue to have local conflicts, I don't see us getting into a real world war again.

Tony737 is correct. We would basically blow each others countries up until we cause a plague among all species. That is why some scientists believe that humans will extinct each other before our sun turns into a supernova and grows big until it consumes our planet. Hopefully we will have spaceships as fast as the speed of light to find far planets with life on them but for now World War 3 is unthinkable
