Does lemon juice really whiten your teeth? Wouldn't it eat away your enamel?

Have you tried it? I dont think I would actually try it though...

Thanks!:)

Yes... the acid in it DOES eat away your enamel. Pretty quick too.

Don't know about lemon juice used as a whitener.. It would DEFINITELY eat away at the enamel! I was watching Doctor Oz, he had a good homemade teeth whitener. Mash a strawberry and mix it with baking soda. Take a tooth brush and scrub it on your teeth leave it on...2 min?? (Might look that up) but yeah, I've been told it works(:

The strawberry contains acids that whitens teeth. It's still an acid, but I don't think it would be as harsh as a lemon and rinse your mouth out too afterwards. Don't wanna leave acids on teeth

Why not get whitening strips or whitening toothpaste that may work better than most stuff

You are correct - heavy intense amounts of citric acid eats away tooth enamel. Concentrated vitamin C chewable vitamins are one of the worst culprits for this problem. I would avoid using lemons (& strawberries) too often, to whiten teeth. Once in awhile, OK - but don't make it a habit. However, eating fresh lemons, oranges, grapefruit - no problem. The acid concentration is low enough that your saliva washes away the residue quickly enough. One of the best teeth whiteners is brushing w/ baking soda, a few times a week. Better than any fruit. Try it. Sweetens your breath, too.

That's too much! Once a week is enough! It is an abrasive and should be used too much.

The baking soda can wear down the enamel.

OK, thanks for the tip. I use it every other day & so far, no bad effects yet. But I also use a very soft tooth brush & don't overdo it, because you are correct - baking soda is mildly abrasive. I'll cut back. :)

No don't try I'm a register dental assistant so that's the worst thing you can do. Best advice is get the zoom whitening and stay away from sodas, tea, coffee.

Yes to both. Lemon juice can be used as a bleaching agent. It is also an acid that can wear away tooth enamel over time.
