according to historical records he was molested and cut to pieces his ears scalp among other things were removed... he had a cabling gun at his disposal but he chose not to take it ... If he did that battle would of turned out much different....
Even though Custer was a general in the U.S. Calvary, he didn't wear an army general's uniform. He preferred civilian attire. When he was killed, the indians probably thought he was a scout or other civilian attached to the company.
I read one account that claims he was recognized by a cousin of his alleged "Indian" wife who proceeded to ream out his ears with an awl in order that he might listen better in his afterlife, evidently he ignored some admonition that was given him prior to this event taking place.
I have to agree with huntbill and the ear poking thing ! I have heard many stories and read many where some say he was mutilated and some say not because he was a brave chief of the White eyes . I read recently that his remains are buried elsewhere also . He was not a General at the time , he was a Colonel ! He committed the worst tactic in the military : dividing his forces ! It would have been the women who did any mutilating , if indeed that was the fact . Guess it's another mystery that we'll never know all the truth of !
