Is this worth a detention?

Friday, a guy in my brother's class was running around the classroom in circles while yelling. So my brother walks up to the guy and says, "Dude, stop you look mentally retarded doing that." Then the dude says, "I'm mentally retarded? I think I'll just commit suicide." My brother was shocked. "No don't even think about doing it."

Later that day, the principal called him in and gave him a detention for calling his friend a retard! My brother tried to tell the principal that he was saying he LOOKED stupid doing it and NOT to commit suicide. Still, he got a detention Tuesday. My brother is not one to exaggerate and my mom takes the principal's side. I think they are both wrong. What do you think?

Also, my brother told me that the principal said that it was none of his business if the friend commits suicide!! I thought the school would make the suicide thing the NUMBER ONE PRIORITY! None of his business my foot.

When i use the word retarded, it might even be a compliment meaning "you're hilarious, i love you." It depends how i say it though. I don't think that's worth a detention. It's the kid's fault for overreacting.

Having worked in the school system, and if all the above is true. Sounds like a "power" call of sorts. One agrees with *fireash345. "Farenheit 451 - great book!

Words matter. This is a case that shows why they do. Strong words can be taken wrong and then hard to get across why they were used. However, the principles comments should be reported to a Superintendent as far as 'not concerned about a student threatening suicide'.

Schools are taking a hardline stance against the term "retarded" being used in an insulting way, as it is insensitive to people with mental handicaps. Your brother's actions weren't out of line but his word choice was unfortunate. Quite simply he's being detained not for what he did but for what he said.

Well think about it: the guy called him a retard. I would punch some one who calls me that. But if the guy running around the class did not get a detention, dude I'm on your side. There are kids like that in a few of my classes and MAN are they annoying! The runner guy I think had more reason to get detention.

It sounds to me like your brother was just trying to help his friend out so he wouldn't look stupid. He could have said it a little nicer though. The principle was right to get on to your brother about what he said, though I think detention is a little harsh. What the principal said about the suicide is bull crap.

Not worth detention to me. He was only making a comment to his friend, not like being a bully or anything. And yes, they should be more concerned about the suicide comment. Priorities messed up..

He should have let the teacher handle it. He never should have gotten out of his seat and got involved. Look where it got him.

I do not think a detention was in order. I can understand the principal bringing your brother in and telling him retard was a poor choice of words. My first thought when I read the story is where was the teacher? Why was the kid disturbing the class? Then When you said Suicide is non of the kids business I was floored. Suicide is EVERYONES business. I would probably not serve detention if I was the brother which is poor advice really. I agree with you. The WHOLE thing is a bunch of sh*t.

No, we need teachers with common sense.

My entire graduating class was a bunch of hell raising heathens (me included). 99% of us had been together since Kindergarten and stuck together like glue.We are the reason 5 teachers quit and 4 others retired early. Or so they claimed. I still laugh over some of the things we did -
