If I put a change of clothes in my carry on bag will the buttons/zipper set of the metal detector?

I'm guessing it won't but it's better safe then sorry

Your carry on back will not go through the metal detector anyway- it will be X-rayed. Carry-on luggage that contains anything suspicious to the X-ray techs will be hand screened anyway.

In general the buttons would not set it off if it were to go actually go though the detector- a threshold can be set below which a small amount of metal will not trigger the device.

No. Your carry on luggage will go through the scanner machine. Actually most airports don't use the metal detectors anymore they use the body scanners. Either way your buttons and zipper won't set them off.
