usually animals runaway to get a feel for their surroundings, just in case they get lost they can find their way back home.

Its because he is probably scared of you or you don't give him enough time to run outside and get fresh air. He is the animal of the wild. Let him explore.

Probably not .. but my guess is he is exploring the outdoors. Jack Russells are incredibly intelligent and high energy dogs. He may not be running away necessarily but if he wanders too far, he could get lost...THAT's not the same as 'running away'.

You will either have to put up a fence or tie him out to prevent him running off. There are far too many dangerous out there for a dog to running loose. He needs a lot of exercise .. and being tied up all day doesn't count.

Hi bikergirl! I think the show Frasier really gave the wrong impression of the breed. They are very athletic and living in an apartment in Seattle really isn't their cup of tea. ! :)

THAT's for sure! But even on the Show (although fictitional) .. He was often taken for walks.

Jack Russells are notoriously 'high maintenance' .. They need to run, and jump, and goof around. Being cooped up would drive them crazy .. thus the need to bolt at the first opportunity.

Exactly!! :) I've never owned one, but I do know a touch about them. They are intellegent, as you mentioned, and need stimuli. It would be like having a border collie cooped up. Talk about a dog that lives to work!

And, you right, even on the show, the dad, who owned him, did take him out. I'm not sure about his character having a cane would be a great match for a Jack Russel either... but fiction is fiction and it was a great $ maker after cheers.

I (of course) am assuming this Jack Russel in the question is neutered.. If not, then the answer is obvious, he wants to go out for doggie treats! :) :) :)

Are there any cats around that could be one of the reasons why he keeps running down the street. Probably trying to catch a cat he been wanting for the longest.

I can only guess here...
He is running away because you do not keep him in a fenced-in yard, or chained up in the yard. You should never let your dog run lose, he could easily be run over & severely injured or killed, so if you love your dog, take him out on a leash.

He is a male - they tend to want to explore more than females. Also, the breed is a high energy & needs activity. Tried walking him a lot & running with him?

Well said. They aren't a breed that can sit around wanting to be lap dogs. Have a good day.

My jacks do the same thing, they chase cars, so now we keep them in the fenced in back yard or walk them, but we would get a tie out and put it on a tree and let the sunbathe or whatevs~ oh yeah and a bucket of water :D they're very hyper, they need to run and play to wear them selfs out

He's exploring the outdoors, it's perfectly normal. If you were locked up in the same house day after day after day you'd jump at the chance to go outside and check out the scenery too!

You need a fence or a leash if you dont have a home that can facilitate a fence.
