What's better a Mac or a PC and why?

thinking about getting a new computer and can't decided whether I want a Mac or PC.

Report as

Neither is better, but both have strong points that they are good for. Note PC means personal computer, not Windows.

A Mac is great for music (iTunes), video editing, music editing, and image editing/creation for example. Mainly, a Mac is best used for people who just want to create things.

On the other hand, a Windows computer is great for games because almost every company is making computer games with Windows in mind first and Mac in mind as a distant second. If gaming is your thing, definitely pick Windows over Mac no matter what.

Costs are fairly relative to what you want. Windows PCs will definitely start out at a lower price mark while Macs start out much higher, but if you want a beefy gaming Windows box you're going to spend about the same as you would on a high end Mac for editing purposes.

In the end, it's all about what you want to do. You can do a lot of the same things on both, but both also excel in their own strengths. A Windows PC can do all that editing and work with music programs including iTunes even if it may not have all the functionality of Mac software in some cases. Vice versa, a Mac has its own library of games, even if it is a smaller one.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, I simply don't understand how a Mac is better for gaming considering that pretty much 100% of computer games are for the PC, with a minority of them also available natively for the Mac.

Gonna piggy back off of Prime goat.
The P.C. is indeed better for anything you wish it to be. Given that you're willing to upgrade and modify it as necessary. Hence why it's called a Personal Computer.
I have never used or needed a mac. Most people lean toward mac because their families grew up with it or they themselves wanted an awesome laptop for school.

However, I never have been disapointed with a P.C. for one reason... I can customize anything and everything!

Haha!

I haveto agree with primegoat BUT to answer the question an Apple PC is better than a HP, Compaq etc for 2 reasons.
1) Apple use top of the line (intel) parts for processing information so the money you spend extra is actually on faster spindle rates and RPM in HDD's or faster transfer rates in SSD's/faster transfer rates in general so unless you knew a huge amount about infrastructures and know when you're getting ripped off then Apple is more expensive but its quality.
2) Mac has a set amount of device drivers which they make specifically for their devices, therefore it's very difficult to get Mac to run (at full capabilities) on a non-Apple computer (although it can be done (look at Hackintosh)) but Microsoft have a vast library of drivers for Apple computers and then you can do what I do on my laptop and have the best of both worlds (dual boot Mac and Windows so i can program in Cocoa and .NET)

HMSIERRA, I have lived with and built my own PCs since my second computer in the mid 90s. I love them. See http://i.imgur.com/ybnNus3.jpg .. I got a mix of Linux and Windows 7, including Windows XP in VMs. Just recently, I was introduced to the Mac, and despite so much time and experience and preference for the PC, I can definitely say that Macs are very nice.

Well, do you want to spend $500 or $1500? (Prices are just guesses, but applegenius said that MacBooks were $1500- $2500 whereas a PC can be $300 at the least)

It really depends on what you're gonna use the computer for. If its for gaming, then definitely PC. Almost every computer game is made for Windows. Personally, I would get both. Also, considering that you can run Windows and Linux in VMware Fusion and use the guest OS' apps almost seamlessly with the Unity feature, a Mac can be the better choice (also taking into consideration that this type of setup works better than running an OSX VM on a PC). In the end, this is a decision that you have to make based on your own preferences.

Apple's Mac computers cost more, but have a longer 'useful lifetime' and a much friendlier user interface. PCs are fine at work where an IT guy can keep all the systems on a generic platform with security tied-in.

A Mac computer can be set up to run both the Windows environment so effectively that PC users will be right at home, plus the Mac environment, too. In that way, the Mac is the best of BOTH worlds. Beyond that, if you have an iPhone and an iPad along with a Mac computer, everything is so easily syncable across the board. They all work hand-in-glove.

Another point to consider, is the PC's unfortunate tendency to contract viruses. I've never, ever had that problem with any Mac.

You should go for a PC. I have a lot of friends that own macs (they all have a 13 inch, non retina display), but my view is that if I spend $700 on a new PC, I can get one with newer technology and better performance in a year or two and not worry about spending another $1700 on a new mac. A previous post did point out that macs have a longer usable lifespan, but if you want style, look at the macbooks made a year of two ago. They are ugly white plastic.

As for viruses, get Norton. and macs CAN get viruses, like what happened a few weeks ago to some computers AT APPLE.
Finally, I have this computer:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/C2M11UA?HP-ENVY-dv6-7210us-Notebook-PC

but if you like mac styling, I suggest this:

http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/ideapad/u-series/u410/

Also, don't fear windows 8. I personally love it because it starts up fast, and the start screen is useful when you learn how to use it.

It is true both have there good points. Macs are better movie editing, etc. Windows is easier to upgrade your existing machine. Macs hold their value whereas a Windows PC does not. There is a Terminal Window in Macs that give you much more control over the system. If you are a heavy online gamer (MMO's) I would suggest a Windows based PC. If you are heavy into editing I would go with a Mac. In either case I would purchase nothing less than a Quad core. For the Mac make sure the processor is the new Intel chip, such as the i7 Quad core unlocked, because it was designed for Apple to run Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.x) and the OS can be upgraded to Mountain Lion. I also suggest a video chipset by Nvidia. They work better for gaming and heavy video editing. If these terms do not make any sense I suggest a Windows based PC. I would also be careful with Norton Antivirus if you are a gamer or do a lot of editing as it will greatly slow down your machine. There are good free antivirus software out there for the PC such as AVG and it works well.

Very long and biased answer. I have more then 25 years with computers. I have used everything. My simple overall answer is: MAC Windows is and always be a "Clunky" collection of programs as that is how it was developed. Mac was based on a "Graphical" foundation and has evolved from that. The OS "X" series is based on the Linux "kernal" and that is public domain software. Os "x" is based on linux. so, Mac is more stable and becoming more compatible. In Windows defense, "Office" is a excellent suite of applications but Open Office is compatible for all current OS's and solves the moving office type docs back and forth. I hope I helped you.

I think the Mac in general is better. It's operating system uses less of the computer resources, and perhaps the worst thing about the PC is the way they tried to copy and implement the MAC operating system.

It seems the PC Operating System is always greatly flawed, and the new software is not compatible with the old versions of windows. PC's just kind of die probably due to their "fragile operating system". Remember Windows copied MAC!

Example of why a MAC hands down is better, if you are a multi-taber on the internet you can minimize the open windows, and they no longer will be suing precious "processor capacity" the PC to my knowledge still cannot do this! MAC: Better, Faster, Stronger, with a longer lifespan.

Helpful (1) Fun Thanks for voting Comments (2)
Report as
Yes but that last thing eliminates the ability to minimize a window with a youtube video going on and still listen to the audio.
Report as
The operating system is an issue of comfort. I have no problems going back and forth between the two. The longer life span issue cannot be judged on a PC. Due to the fact that it all depends on what kind of PC you choose to get. Not to mention all the parts are replaceable and fully customizable. I believe a mac can be recomnded for people who have no desire to see how far they can push technology in their home.

I chose to bring my PC to be a gaming computer. I have never known a mac to be as visualy admiring as my PC.

I say both! because they're both have the same technology and are both very popular electronics. I have a Mac myself and my sister PC they both go through very good. and understand, just go on a website and search on the engineer and creator of both laptops. That's what I did. Try it! I know it sounds boring, but come on it's a good advise.

FrozenFoxy has good advice. But also, what kind of computer is used in your present or future career or school? In the world of work, PC's are the norm except in some specialized fields, or some rare companies. Graphic design tends to lean towards Apple, but industrial design leans towards PC. Most businesses in general use PC.

(PC means Personal Computer. Do you mean to say Windows vs Mac?)

From a software perspective Windows and Mac are about equal. While Mac seems to attract a more 'hip' crowd most software programs today can run/install on both OS. The biggest differences are usually in Gamer software which seems to marketed on Windows rather than Mac. However, exclusives are almost none-existent as far as I know.

From a hardware perspective Mac PC are expensive. Absurdly so. With the price ceiling of a top of the line Mac I can build a comparable PC, cheaper, with any OS and software of my choosing. And, best part of all, I can expand and upgrade the hardware at will without worrying about a warranty violation.

Ultimately it comes down to: Mac, due to marketing, is the "cool" personal computer. While most Windows' supporting PCs are general use. The Mac machine may be well put together and if you don't plan on tinkering with anything (software or hardware) it's a safe bet. But if you're the type of person who likes to use the computer for whatever you need, on the fly so to speak, go with a Windows based platform. (Or Linux, which I hear is even more flexible of an OS)

I personally think that a mac is better because of the speed and the noise.
With a PC it takes up more space because of the motor ( the motor makes a lot of noise)
A mac has a built in motor. the speed is fast for it too turn on.
A PC takes more time to open documents and for it too turn on.
This is why i think it is better.

Now listen to this. ALL OF THESE COMMENTS ARE B.S!!!! P.C is better. Macs, are not faster, more expensive, harder to use when it comes to getting MODS on a game and much much more.

Let me please start with speed. Speed has nothing to do with MAC OR PC!!!! It has to do with your computer and internet. I know Macs AND P.Cs that load a page in ten minutes. I know some of the best computers that load like 1 fps because of the internet connection. Speed has to do with the age of your computer. Plus their are p.cs that load a page instantly (Their are macs too)

Generally a pc is better in my opinion. With a pc, it is much easier to replace things that get broken and let's say you suddenly decide to take up computer gaming, you could simply buy a new graphics card and possibly a new processor whereas there really isn't anything you can do for a mac.
I'm not just talking trash on macs because I don't know what they're like, I have both. I use my pc for virtually everything. The mac just feels very closed and hard to access. In a pc, it is much easier to access files and change them if you want to, it feels like windows respects me as a person a lot better then apple does (apple seems to assume that I know nothing about programming and would never need to view the files so long as they work). However, I will try to be fair now; people I know that use macs say they feel very user friendly, which I suppose is a plus if you intend on using a computer simply for basic stuff.

So in the end it really boils down to what you want to do with your computer
If you want to use it for basic stuff like accessing the internet and downloading music and movies, then buy a mac.
If you want to use it for anything else, buy a pc.
