Can a person in NC collect Social Security disability for the time they are out of work due to having surgery?

Going to the VA hospital March 26, 2013 to have my middle toe on my left foot cut off due to infection. As it stands now, I will be out of work for two weeks. I live pay check to pay check and was wondering if anyone knows if I would be able to collect disability for that short period of time.

I agree with Sherry. Hearing something from a disability claim----any disability claim takes much time. Your best bet would be unemployment if you are eligible for it. A phone number for the VA health benefits is 877-222-8387.
Also, here is a link for questions and answers about the VA disability act.

Hope it helps. Good luck with your surgery.
Also, if you are thinking about trying Social Security, here is the toll free number for them. 1-800-772-1213 It is best to contact them when they first open which I believe is around 7. (you will get through much quicker) Also, it is less congested during the middle of the month. At the beginning of the month, it is difficult timewise to get somebody.

Thanks. Thanks go to the good Lord that the shelter isn't but a mile from the hospital. Surgery and after care, the government will cover. Will check in to see about disability due to my health through the VA. Alot of vets here at the shelter is getting disability due to their health. This diabetes is putting a hurt on me.

My husband is also a Diabetic, so I know what you mean. I know for certain that diabetes IS indeed granted more often than not with disability from the VA. My brother in law is diabetic also, and he gets 80%. I don't remember how those percentages work, but unlike social security, the VA has percentages based on the actual disability. Social Security does not do a percentage. They either approve or deny. Hope it helps Ed.

Thanks. I have periphial neuropathy in my feet and they constantly hurt. Being a security guard having to make rounds don't help. Reason I have to get my toe cut off is due to me cutting the tip off when I was clipping my toe nails. You should of seen my bathroom. It looked like a slaughter house from all the blood. Reckin the weeks work of antibiontics the VA put me on didn't work and that is why infection set in. It is a disease that is eating away on my toe bone.
My primary health care doctor told me to stay away from my toes with clippers. lol

And you should Ed!!!!! You know better than that. lol And, that is the reason WHY you should stay away from doing it yourself. A diabetic has much more of a chance to risk infection than one without diabetes. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know though am I??? lol Neuropathy is very common in a diabetic.....and yes very painful.

yepper, already know. went through a class on diabetes when diagnosed. thought I could clip my nails myself. my fat gut wouldn't let me bend over enough to see that I just had the nail in the clipper instead of the nail and tip. live and learn the hard way. lol

Sorry about the toe Edward, I too am diabetic and developing neuropathy in my feet. Been trying to get more exercise because of it, I would think the VA would be able to help somehow with getting some form of disability.

I agree Sherry. I didn't know you were a diabetic. Were you diagnosed as a juvinile? Of course you don't have to answer, I was just curious. My daughter that just had a baby is a widow now at 24 because her husband passed away from complications of juvinile diabetes. He was only 29. I worry so much about my husband having it. I watch him like a hawk. I cook from a diabetic cookbook, and I am constantly "reminding" him what he is doing or not doing right. lol I don't know about where you live, but here in Alabama, insulin isn't even "prescription required" any longer, and that shocked me. I was glad.

Sherry, I hope the neuropathy don't cause you much pain. I am on 2400 mg. of gabapentain a day to ease the pain. It does pretty good, took out the burning sensation but my feet still hurt. I just have to tolerate it. Going to find out about help from the VA.

Hi Edward, sometimes it takes months or even years to apply and get approved for disability income. You might be able to collect unemployment insurance easier. Contact your local employment office if you are an employee and see, they often even make payments if your hours are temporarily cut back.

Hi Edward. You have to be out of work for one year before you can file for disability.

That is what I was told by a Social Security worker one time. Said as long as I am working, I can't apply for disability. Wondered if short term would be different. Thanks. off to the employement office.

Hi Edward. Sorry to read about your injury. I am going through the process myself at this time. Unfortunately, there is no "short" term. Disability is disability which if one becomes able to work again, they can request their benefits be stopped. This is where the misconception "short term" comes from. Wish I could help but since I can't, I wish you all the best in life and health and from my entire being, thank you for your service. Take care of yourself.

No you can't. But you might be able to collect state disability, or buy yourself an AFLAC policy!!
