Is Amarah, Iraq safe for a young american girl to live for a couple years?

My husband was offered a very well paying job there as a translator and he is Iraqi of course, his family is there and also his daughter. The only thing stopping him from the todays flight is ME. It would just be temporary for 1-3 years for experience and saving money. I am considering going with him and he is concerned for my safety. It's hard for us to spend time away from each other. Please respond if you have insights and experience or know someone deployed in Iraq that has real-life experience. And also every city is different from the other, something to consider.

It depends on where you are and what you do. Some places are more open than others. I would suggest you talk to the American Embassy there or to other governmental agencies and discuss the environment there. A friend of mine went to visit family in Iran and had to wear a burqa in their hometown, but not when she was in certain more "touristy" cities that are more open to Americans.

Good suggestion. I've heard of burqa but don't remember which kind of garment it is? I am already a practicing islam convert, and have been wanting to try wearing a hijab here even, so going there would just be the real-life experience and having to cover up my body is no concern of mine, that was just a given. My husband was explaining that detail to me about covering my hair only in certain cities but i would just assume to wear it all the time for my safety and not getting some guy wound up for any reason.

I believe the hijab is the long dress and the hair covering/scarf right? The burqa is the full head-to-toe black dress with the little black mesh window to see out of. I wish you good luck, whether you choose to go or not. Just remember to always keep track of your closest Embassy, regardless of the country you're in.

yes hijab is the head cover but the dress is called something else, not sure what. i've also heard of Nijab, not sure which garment that is referring to..

Of course not duh. Does anybody nowadays watch the news? Capturing a american is like hitting the lottery for them and don't expect the government to rescue you. You will be tortured then be beheaded and the video will be uploaded to a gore site.

well i guess a way to look at it is if im any woman, iraqi or arab native there. I would take any drastic measure to conceal that i'm a white american if i had to, wearing the hijab and also the whole face covering so only my eyes will show.
