What kind of recording device or software would I use to layer tracks over one another, such as a beatbox vocal over a melody or lead vocal?

I want to be able to sing my own lead vocals, my own backup vocals and use my voice to imitate the sounds of various instruments.

Try audacity, it allows you to record several recordins over eachother, it is a program that you can download, you will need to buy a mic though, but it works whith any usb microphone, here is the link for audacity http://audacity-beta.en.softonic.com/

The Steinberg Cubase 6 program would be perfect to use for layering tracks for your performance. You'll get to download it for free at www.afreecodec.com ? Audio Tools ? Music Creation.
