How do I break the habit of picking my nails?

I used to bite my nails when I was younger, but when I got braces, that habit was broken since I could no longer bite them. But now, I pick at them instead of bite them. I realize that this is an even harder habit to break than biting. Since with biting, I could just put something that tastes bad on my nails and then I wouldn't bite them... but I don't know what to do about picking them.

I don't just pick them when I'm nervous, but also when I'm bored or stressed or in an awkward situation. I notice that I even pick them when I simply have nothing else to do with my hands. They are short and ugly and I get hang-nails a lot. I notice other people with nice nails and I feel bad, but I can't seem to stop. Even when my brain notices that I'm picking my nails and I tell myself to stop, I physically can't until I've picked off whatever piece of my nail I'd been picking at. It gets really annoying and I don't know what to do about it.

Please help. :(

i would try to find something different to do with your hands. For example, I will play with a pencil or something to get my hands to stop. Another solution that I use, to break any habit is making a game out of it. Like every time you catch yourself doing it tell yourself to stop and try to see how long you can go without doing it, it will only be minutes at first but soon it will turn into hours, days, weeks and after you havnt done it for about two weeks chances are that the habit will be gone.

Hope this helped :)

I have the same situation as you. Try to give your hands something to do instead of picking your nails.

I have ADHD and it became a habit for me. i just do it. when i got my braces, it became much harder but then i was able to do it when my nails grew a bit longer. when my braces came off, so did the tip of the nails. but broken nail tips are great for satisfying a an irritating itch.

whiskey (?) lots and lots of whiskey.
seriously....
get one of those many sided buffing nail files and keep it with you at all times. when you get bored or stressed reach for that instead. groom your nails and love them

you may not be into this, but getting acrylic nails really helped me! Im not one of those people who like having girly nails but I got like a french manicure acrylic nail and I stopped picking them! Also, My mom told me to keep a rubber band on my wrist and every time i picked them,( I or even my friends lol) would snap it wicked hard. it didnt really work. But its worth a shot! Ooh another thing is i made myself a bracelet with a paper clip on it (which was kinda stylish) but it was removable, so whenever I felt awkward, I would just play with the paper clip. (I always kept refills in my pencil bag) and i guess you can you use other fun things to fiddle with,,, I just used a paper clip lol. So, I really hoped this helped:)

Thank you for the help! :) I have simple rubber bracelets that I wear around my wrist all the time and sometimes I play with them when I'm bored or feeling awkward instead of picking my nails. It sort of helps, so I'll try to chose to play with them more than pick at my nails whenever I feel the need to. ^^

Very wise! I was going to suggest that weird rubber band thing as one thing. I like you and your endangered animals and SN wantoknoweverything. Even the way you type. I hope you don't take offense if I attempt to add or follow your ask.com stuff, however that works. You are wise. Waniver, when you learn to play violin, the teacher has you, or had me, for your right bowing hand, keep a pencil held as a bow and do exercises. I was a nail biter for a long time. I have GAD (generalized anixety disorder). I just call it the level of of stupidity in the general populace as measured by what they do to cause such trauma in me hehee :P. When I started violin, I became obssessed with it. I had to keep my left hand trimmed and not mess with the calouses, and keep my right hand with exercises I would perform whenever my hand was idle. It consists of where you grip the "frog" i.e. the part of the bow you hold on to. It is like making a subtle "ROCKING" hand and using chopsticks ;). I am sure between ask.com and ehow and youtube you can find videos on this. I quit biting my nails after taking up violin. It speaks to my soul. There is always something you will want MORE :) Use this to your advantage :) I hope this helps!

I think you just want to find some way to release pressure or some bad conditions. You have quite biting your nails successfully. So please distract your attention to others. For example, grasp a pencil in your hand or just put your hands on your back, doing something else so that you have no time to consider picking your nails.

Tell yourself that every time you bite your nails, you are proving to yourself that you have no self control. - Hope this helps.

that is so unhealthy!! negative reinforcement NEVER works as well as positive reinforcement, or even distraction :). Please don't berate yourself Soren, over nothing :)

Try slowly stroking a frog. If this is unsuccessful, then there is hope for you yet. Go to the dentist and get the best cowboy hat you spot. Next, slap it on your head and do the hokey pokey. Then your infection will be cured

this is another good and helpful suggestion with merit. My nails are genetically thin and flexible. When I get manicures or pedicures, the industrial like sealant (especially for the feet, stays place with a shiny design and little fake gem accent on the big toes in ballet shoes and living on catalina island!) can help strengthen the nails. So when you pick or chew they don't fall apart and easing off something while you train and/distract your brain will work. Also, never underestimate the power of bribing yourself ;). My parents got me to stop sucking my fingers as a child my bribing me hehe. Worked like a charm. Positive refinforcement by something earned = Reward.

Just find something else to do with your hands or get another habit that would be simple to do (ex: chewing gum) Hope this helps :)
