Yes it is a waste of helium. Helium is actually a very rare element here on earth as its light enough to escape our atmosphere. We are running out of it and once it's gone it's gone. Do your own research into it, and don't be wasteful with Helium. It's a very important element to us, used for much more then just balloons. I'm not sure why we ever filled them with the stuff in the first place. but the actual practice of inhaling Helium is completely harmless in low amounts. worst that can happen if you kept inhaling it is you pass out from lack of oxygen which will damage brain cells.
The good news is, breathing helium does not kill brain cells. The bad news is that breathing helium can, in fact, kill you ? but not because of the helium, rather because the lack of oxygen when you inhale the helium. As you breathe in a balloon full of helium, you are not breathing in any oxygen, which your cells need -
YES!!!! it is really bad for you. this is because helium contains little to no oxygen. when you breathe it in it deprives your brain of oxygen. if you breathe in to much, or to many times you can pass out. helium also interrupts the signals your brain makes that tells your lungs to keep breathing. so if you did pass out from inhaling too much helium, you would stop breathing.

I do it at the odd occasion. I don't do it a lot. Just to amuse kids who get bored with all the "mushy" stuff at weddings. I am still alive and kickin' and still deemed the "cool aunt". I also tell the kids they can't do it until they are older. I also don't do a lot of it.
if you breathe a lot of helium and try to speak it will mess up your vocal chords and your brain. sucking one or two balloons won't hurt you I do it all the time its funny. just be careful you might get a little light headed from the lack of oxygen. you'll be fine go ahead and do it.
