Why does my cousin's dog dig in make digging motions in her cage?

I'm sitting in the room watching the dog try and dig through her cage. Why is she doing this?

Bored. Needs exercise. Is trying to make a bed. Just a few of the reasons she could be doing this.

Maybe it's a subtle dog way of screaming " Let me out of here!" Let the poor dog out, would ya?

For whatever reason, dogs like to bury things, esp their food or toys. My indoor dog does it too. Its genetic instinct i think.

My guess is pure instincts. Think escape. In the wild, if an animal, (not just dogs), are confined/trapped, their natural instinct would be to dig themselves out of their situation. Before there was manmade plastic pet carriers, animals only had to deal with what nature had to impose. Dirt, wood, stones. (and if they were lucky, an occasional bone!)

At the very least, the poor creature needs some attention--could you play with it more often?
