Hi muffet! it's good to see a family eating healthy at home! it's also less expensive than restaurants.
According to the USDA a family of four on average spends $239.30, add another individual at $60.40, and you are right on target! Here is their site.

Hope you and hubby can work out a budget you both approve!

Honestly don't see how you could feed your family Healthy foods and spend much less!
Food is very expensive!
Try having him plan meals for a week, shop for them and THEN see what he thinks!:-).

Your welcome!:-) just show him all our replies and see if he still thinks so.
Still like my first idea... Especially as you've said he never really shops for groceries! Lol!

Good suggestion Witt! It's easy to blather nonsense from afar. Collecting real info is quite possibly the last thing he wants to do. It would remove a nitpick topic. Lol! :)

Yep! Lol!!

Still, I do sympathize. It's hard to make ends meet! I sure hope they find a way to stay nutritious, delicious, and in a livable budget. Not easy!
Report as
@Happy, not easy at all! We've managed to cut by 1/3 by being creative but we also don't have a brood of kids other than at vacation time& then of course the whole budget goes out the door!:-(.

That's a lot! I think for a family of 5 you should probably be spending about 300.

Hi Muffet, I understand your husband's point of view, and I know how he came to that opinion -- but he's wrong. Even so, sometimes it's hard to balance income and expense, and there have to be compromises.

We had five kids and I honestly don't know how Daizy managed to feed us all on the money I was earning. Inflation has forced prices up and when you consider paying for the amount of food needed by a brood of hungry kids, it's frightening.

I can't help you with an amount -- I live in a different country and our chicks have all flown the nest anyway -- but have you considered that there may be cheaper ways to feed them while still giving them all they need to satisfy their needs, their taste buds, and their appetites?

Why not Google "economy meals" or "living on a budget" or anything else that seems to relate to your problem? You don't have to do everything they suggest but you'll certainly get ideas about how to prepare a whole variety of tasty meals without spending quite so much.

Good luck with that.

Great idea! We have a saying here for the lean economic times - "salad days." Wonder how the butcher's son would like that one?

Is Daizy's hip improving now that she can rest at home? Send her my best!

A little, Happy, but not much. But I'll pass that on, and thanks.

I was retrenched soon after turning 50 and had never been unemployed before. The first thing we did was chop our food budget. It was amazing what wonderful variety we discovered when we were looking for ways to economise.

Our medical bills have sent us to the same creative zone. I hear ya!

Sorry the recovery is slow. Thanks for passing on my well wishes. We've never met, but the stories you tell!!! I do not know her, but I know I like her! :)

Agree on both fronts; we've managed to cut back by about 1/3 by just cooking differently, which really means a lot here on Island, prices sky high and yet Salaries not!:-(.
And Daizy sure has a place in our hearts! You have brought her to life in your stories and comments!:-).

Thanks, Witte. She works her way into many of my stories.

Now, my family Is 4 people and just today we spent around $100 on food and around $70 yesterday. We don't go shopping every day but about every other day or every two days. So, I am guessing around $300 to $400. It honestly depends on how many people are in your family and where you shop and also, if you get name-brands or generic. I imagine if we got ALL name-brand, we'd spend about $570 OR MORE just because every cent counts nowadays. I REALLY hope I helped and good luck shopping !
