I honestly do not like cats, and with young children I do not recommend them. They might want to hug and cuddle and pick up the cat, and it will hiss and attack ((Maybe even permanently scar the kids for life.)) They are more independent than dogs, and don't really love attention as much. Dogs are sweet, but it depends on the breed your getting. Golden retrievers/ Beagles etc. are great with kids, but PitBulls and Rottweilers ((Not that I hold anything against them, I love them both)) have short tempers and vicious bites. But dogs are loyal, faithful companions who rush to the door and kiss you even though you just had to pick up the mail across the street. Cats count down the days they are living with you. Overall, I recommend a dog if you have kids. The dog will love them forever!!!!
I think cats are the best pets for a child to have. And this may sound cruel, but I think one thing a cat does which a dog won't, is teach a child manners, that is, if the child roughhouses with a dog, the dog will tolerate it, but a cat will not hesitate to scratch if the child pulls its tail or otherwise abuses the cat. I don't think any child should be allowed to hurt any animal, but a cat delivers that lesson quickly, but it also doesn't hold a grudge. I'm afraid my response when a child tells me, "Rammie scratched me", is "And WHY did he scratch you?" And, by the way, my granddaughters are great with our cats--and have only ever been scratched once each.
I'm medium sized dog such as a beagle or a terrier but not too small like a Chihuahua until they are older and more responsible we wouldn't want the dog to end up hurt but any dog would be perfect for the family if respected and treated fairly
