Why has our society in the U.S. become politically correct?

To me it's gone too far and it makes people overly sensitive and thin skinned. Everybody gets a trophy. They don't keep scores in children's sports games. Some high schools don't have valedictorians so they don't hurt the other students' feelings. I feel this has made people overly sensitive, overly coddled and weak minded.

Sadly, I couldn't agree more. That was a spot on summation. If people here in America really knew where it came from and its self defined usage, they'd never allow it to happen, if they value their first amendment rights.

Societies tend to swing like pendulums; first nobody cares what they say to anybody, then they overreact and try to be "fair" to everybody. Right now, we're looking like idiots while we try to be "fair" to everybody.

I totally agree with you Jeremy. Just this morning, I read in my local newspaper about the "Spring Egg Hunt" held at the local school for little kids. It's always been called "Easter Egg Hunt" until this year. I'm a traditionalist and tend to get a little ticked off at all of the political correctness going on.

So true. It's almost as if everyone's afraid to have a belief now, because someone else might get "offended." Like ancient_hippy pointed out, we can't even mention the name of a holiday without it getting changed. I remember in Rhode Island, there was a Christmas tree in a hotel and because of complaints they ended up making it called a "holiday tree." Are you kidding me?

Whiners & Ignorance. They didnt get their way as a child so they carry their grudges into adulthood and live to ruin the lives of others, Basically they never emotionally grew up.

Spot on, Jeremy. We're doing it in Australia, too. In a children's soccer team ALL the kids get a trophy. In school it's not permitted for one child to out-perform another. The result of course is to encourage mediocrity. We are training a generation of AVERAGE adults who have not learned the value of competition.

I agree. I have never understood the everyone wins philosophy. How are you to learn to strive for anything? It is pointless and does not teach children any survival tactics which they will need to face the world away from mom and dad.
