What to do if your cat is sick?

I got a 9 1/2 week old kitten 2 days ago. And it seems to be crying. I don't know if it just misses its siblings and is scared to be in a new environment or if it is sick. She's be very energetic and I've filled her food and water dish each morning.

If crying is the kitten's only 'symptom' I would wait another week or so before you start worrying. Cats get very upset when their environment changes, so she is probably having a hard time adjusting to the move, and yes she probably misses her siblings. Just give it a little time.

Take her to the vet. She needs to go anyway to get all her immunizations.

I am not a cat expert but it sounds like your cat misses it's mother and/or siblings. If there are no other symptoms it's a good chance that's what it is. I noticed when animals are sick they usually just lay around and don't say anything to anybody. Even when they are dying they just lay there. If your cat is eating and coming around you crying that is more than likely what the problem is. I'm on my second book by James Herriot. He was a Scottish Veterinarian in England years ago and he wrote all about being a Vet. Almost all the sick animals did this. Just laid around with no life in them, not making any sounds. The only ones that made sounds were the ones giving birth.

Your new kitten wants attention. She probably has a little separation anxiety. Since your kitten is eating, drinking and active as a kitten should be I do not think it is "sick". Buy some toys to keep him/her engaged. Interact with your kitten. Play with him/her. While sitting around, put your kitten on your lap. All your kitten seeks is love, attention and affection. Also, please be a responsible pet owner and take to a vet to be spayed or neutered and to get the necessary vaccines. Enjoy your new addition!

Take it to the vet or buy one of his sisters or brothers.

If it is a long, plaintive cry, it is looking for mom. As long as it is eating and drinking properly (and using the litter box correctly - or as well as a kitten can), it should be fine. Giving it some extra attention should not hurt either. Buy a brush or a comb and start a grooming ritual with your kitten. At that age, all the mother is doing now is grooming. You can do that, too.
