How bad is a bypass? and can it kill you

my great grandfather is in the hospital and he had a heart attack.. lung collapse.. and now he needs a double bypass.... is there any other way to make him better without all the surgery?

They almost never do this type of surgery unless they are pretty sure that the patient will get through it and recover. This surgery saves many lives. Make your gr-grandfather a cheerful poster for his room.

A friend had a multiple by-pass and his doctor told him there was only one chance in 20 that he would die. It worried him sick until I pointed out that 1 in 20 was a 95% success rate. Then he was happy.

It's hard to imagine his doctor putting it to him like that. I think he and his wife must have been agonizing over it and came up with a focus on the negative. That was 12 years ago and he's still going strong.

What a great way to look at it. 12 years is a good long time to be well afterwards.

It's a very risky and dangerous surgery, and he could die, but he will die if he doesn't get it

ok.... so there is a higher risk that they could take him off of support this moment...
Report as
If they want to take him off support that means that they are not sure he is able to survive the surgery

It become, rather commonplace today, obviously, as with any surgery, there is risk, involved, but if all goes well, they should be home, in less than a week
