Why do parents put their kids in private school?

Report as

The actual reason we send our children to school at all is to get educated in a variety of ways. intellectually, academically, socially and even emotionally.

Problem is .. our public school systems have been watered down so much with legalities and social expectations that the system itself has become convoluted. Learning and behavioural disabilities are now becoming more and more understood (and I use that term loosely), so methods of teaching have to be "adjusted" to cope in order to just get through the school year.

Kids are graduating public high schools and are far too often still quite illiterate. Kids are spending more time learning about how to socialize than they are actually learning how to read, write and learn how to learn.

Private schools tend to have more control over their curriculum which (at least the way understand it), keeps them more grounded towards actual teaching and learning. Typically even just the ability to have smaller classrooms can enhance learning capabilities.

However, even in private schools, there is and always will be social interference.

Sometimes the child is being bullied, sometimes they think they're too good for public school(if they're rich), sometimes they think it will keep their children out of drugs/alcohol. Many reasons...

-If their rich
-If the kid is being bullied
-If the teachers are jerks
-If they can't stand school, and complain all the time...
-Also, if the school has drug or alcohol abuse, they might not feel safe to leave their kids at that kind of place.

A lot of the times, the classrooms are smaller and the students get more one on one time with the teacher. It helps them score better on the SAT's and then when it's time for college entry, it may be a little more prestigious to have private schools on the application.

I agree with you. But I have met parents that are just paranoid about public schools. Too bad they don't do it for the "right" reasons.
Report as
The world is different now than when the parents were kids. They think they are protecting their children. What they fail to realize, is that after graduation, and even now...the kids are still living in the world and still exploring different things just like they did back in the day.

You don't know that. There are people who have neither and they still go to private school. I have more brains than money and went to private school for one year. Just because you didn't have any issues with it doesn't mean other people don't. Everyone learns differently.

We put our kid in private school, even though we can barely afford it. I've done both private and public myself and I learned more in 3 years of private school than in 6 years of "publik skool". We registered her into both a private school and a publik skool, the paperwork we filled out for the publik skool had all kinds of misspelled words and grammatical errors, reinforcing my long held belief that publik skool ejimacashin is inferior to private school. The publik skool sistim in America is failing miserably, I love my daughter too much to put her into one of these government indoctrination centers.

What ages were you in public school and private? Maybe you learned more because you were older and there was more to learn and you understood more. Did you point out the errors? Be part of the solution? See I have a real problem with the things you say about public school and the way you make fun. It's the most important job yet they're extremely underpaid. Their hands are tied with kids who are unruly and parents who don't care. We should try to help build up not tear down. I'm glad you're able to send your daughter to private school. Most cannot.
Report as
Well that's just it, I am a parent who cares. If the public school system worked I'd gladly send my kid there, I'd save lots of money, but the teechers yoonyins have destroyed the system. It puts kids out into the world who can't read. We taught our kid to read by age 5. Yes there are unruly kids, I don't want my kid in that environment.
Report as
I don't know what kind of public schools everyone else goes to, but my public school is nice! NO bullying, teachers teach nicely, and everything is generally good! so everyone can stop saying ALL public schools are inferior to private! (Not saying most are)

They feel that the kid will get a better education.
As Tony said: public schools are government indoctrination centers. Unfortunately some private schools are religious indoctrination centers. You have to choose the right school. I think home schooling is the best if the parents are qualified and if they can do it.

Agree that sadly home schooling has become the better alternative. If,and that's a Big IF; the parents are up to it and keep it to schooling... And also make sure their kids are exposed to interaction with other kids through other means, sports, arts, etc. The Social Interaction Factor is important as kids grow up, it teaches them skills they'll need when they go out into the "real world".
I did 2years of home schooling(7&8th) in conjunction with an American University, and loved it! Made the choice to come to U.S. to finish in Public School and eventhough some of it was quite good, mostly I never even opened a book and graduated with a 3.5! And that was in 1977! Even then the Public School system here was way behind others.

I put my children in private school because I felt the education was better and they had more one on one attention from the teachers! They both did amazing! Glad of my decision!

Better education, more one on one time, dislikes for students and/or teachers. I know that one of the reasons can be religious.

Maybe religious purpose, some have a religious foundation. Maybe they went to one and it was a good experience. Perhaps they think it provides a better teacher to student ratio. many possible reasons some valid some not.

What does it matter wherever parents want to put the kids in public or private schools it it's their choice to do so.if you are paying for then you have the right to know. If are not paying what does matter to you were they go its there money they worked for and can spend how they want to spend it.

A far better education, period. All of the other BS comes right from mouths of your government, in hopes of fooling you. College officials are frustrated, they're being sent graduated seniors that have no where near the education needed for college. Remedial training and educating just to get students where they should have been in high school. It has nothing to do with bullying, being rich, being anything--it's simply to give their children a better future

Many reasons. The level of education tends to be higher, the class size is smaller so they can pay more attention to each student. Private school tends to include family participation. If it is a religious school, you will be seeing people on Sunday. Of course not every private school is all that good and not every public school is all that bad.

www.Bullying.org. Is Canadian but has lots of helpful info.

stopbullying.gov. Some good advice but not all too much direct action info.
Also some good Teen lines and info:

www.teenhealthandwellness.com. Gives listings for all kinds of stuff for Teens!:-).
www.teencentral.net. Run by kidspeace.org.
Check them out and maybe you can find some ways to help stop this or ways to deal with it. Hope so, good luck!:-).

Private schools are expensive, and not many people want to pay that price. People expect private schools to have less people, so they pay the asking price so teachers can pay more attention to their child/children. Less people can mean better education, especially since some kids aren't too strong in one subject, but a teacher has more time to work with them if there's less people. The problem is, more people think less people are going to want to send their kids to private school, so, more people send their children! That way, the advantage of private schools is no longer an advantage, it's like paying a high price for a public school! Of course, that might not be the only reason that parents put their children in private schools, or it may not be a reason at all! Parents make their on desicions!

Depends, sometimes it's a nicer. Safer, protected environment, better teachers, smaller community, discipline, no nonsense policy. Reputation has a lot to do with it. That said, I believe that if you REALLY want to learn and become successful you can do it at any school. I know twins that took separate roads in education middle school and up. Both successful professionals. One private, one public.
Problems arise if the school becomes out of control.

Well, they're rich. They want their children to have a better education. Not a lot of kids make it in life in public schools. It's the way thing are in public schools. My parents were poor so I couldn't go to a private school. But in every school, there will be bullies, bad language, etc.. Public interference. So, they have money to spend. But I've been inside private schools too (last week) NOT SO PERFECT.

The main diffrence between public and private school is that the parents have a closer connection with the teacher. And sometimes because of religous reasons like you probably might want your child in a Muslim Catholic or Jew school.
