How to enter boot menu?

my friend's computer is not working from today morning.
its says a file is got corrupt so we decided to format it.
have a windows installation cd but as his computer is too old there is no option like boot menu as in newer computers there is only del for that normal bios and cmos setup.
so we entered that setup and entered advance bios setup and changed the first boot device to cd-rom from floppy and lest as second an third as hard disk and cd-rom respectively as it is.
but when we did restart our computer it was written boot from cd and after almost 30 seconds it again gets restarted and i am 100% sure that the cd is working as i use it regularly?
please tell me how to do that with step by step instructions.

Can you boot from the installation cd? I'm not sure when Windows started making their installation cds bootable. A install cd can work but still not be a bootable cd. If you can not boot from the cd, look up how to create a boot disk.
