Do you have to go to college to get a good job?

Report as

You can also go to a trade school (like culinary school, hairdressing school, mechanic school). When you say 'good job', think about what you are looking for. Does 'good job' mean a lot of $? Or a lot of flexibility and free time? Or something that you will enjoy? You don't have to go to college; but don't rule it out yet. People who go to college tend to earn more money upon graduating. Make sure you pick a subject area that interests you if you decide to go. Also, it depends where you want to live. Different areas of the country have different needs for different professions. Look at your strengths, and then talk to people in different job fields. See what they have to say about the jobs.

That completely depends on what your definition of "good" is. Are you wanting high paying, personally rewarding or both? College is not a requirement but will make you more intelligent.

Not so sure if college actually makes one more intelligent. Know a lot of people who have MBA's and other higher education degrees whom I wouldn't hire to do any job not done better by someone who actually worked hard, applied themselves and learned on the job! Sadly a lot of Organizations are stuck in antiquated hiring practices and by rote hire only those with the right "letters" added to their schooling..

Well I do have to agree with you there.

Yes, you have to attend college in order to get a good career. I heard you can do some without going to college but it does limit your options in what you're interested to do in life.

College or a trade school. Many people attend college and take the easiest possible courses (Liberal Arts?) but don't actually learn how to do anything in the job market. A trade school can qualify you in many well-paying fields, or an apprentice program. But simply a high school graduation isn't really enough any more.

No you don't. Granted, having a college degree offers you more opportunities to high paying jobs but you can live quite comfortably with a trade school education. Electricians, plumbers and other tradesmen make a very nice living. You can also go into business for yourself and do quite well - assuming you have a good idea, a better business plan and are willing to work your rear end off. College isn't for everyone but it shouldn't be. We all need good, well trained tradesmen as well.

It would help, but no you don't HAVE to. I didn't go to college, I chose to serve my country instead, and now I have an AWESOME career :-) The Beautiful Mrs.737 went to college but she does the same job I do and she has a student loan to pay off.

Generally you do, but there are always exceptions. When you enter the work force it becomes you against all of the others applying for the position, the better you look the better your odds. It's a dog eat dog world, don't be the bone

No, you do not need to go to College, and yes, in many cases Companies are stuck in antiquated hiring systems where they are unable to see beyond the letters added to someones schooling to figure if that person is actually the best qualified. Comes down to what you want to do in your life work-wise and whether taking on that huge debt of College will help you achieve that. If you want to be an Engineer, a Medical professional(any kind), a Architect, or any field requiring specialized knowledge; by all means you'd need to go to College. If you're not really sure but do have certain interests, you might want to try a trade school and or apprenticeship first to see what you think, and you can still go to college then if you decide it's necessary.

if you are a talented guy or in the past, a lot of people have given you a lot of compliments (no lie). You don't need to go to college school for a good job.

I'm studying in a college but my main job now doesn't involve to my major in college. That's writing, my habit when I was high school. Try to live and be success, there are a lot of chances for you to have a good job. No need for a paper.

you dont have to but it would be the best choice for you to go with to start your career and if you dont go to college then there will be a more likely chance that you wont have your dream job/career. And you might not get paid as much and also your job that you wanted and required a college edu.

No, that's not true. There are so many successful (self-made and otherwise) people who didn't go to college. I always say the key ingredient is passion. With passion and motivation, you'll surmount whatever odds come your way, even if it means not having a fancy college degree. And like some of the previous posters pointed out, these days you can get some solid career training at vocational training schools. Find one in your area if you're interested in short term education that deals with handy careers.
