Any ideas on how to get the dog to stop whining at my door?

Pekinese/Yorkshire Terrier mix about 2 years old. Her owner is asleep and usually the dog will stay on her bed while she sleeps but the dog is whining at my door now and it's after midnight so she's keeping me awake. She doesn't need to be let out since she has access to the yard through her owner's bedroom and when I let her in just a few moments ago she was just a sniffing around and trying to get at the kitty food - I have a cat - and then I tried carrying the puppy back to her mommy and giving her a nudge as I set her down and whispered since she's asleep but the puppy just followed me back. As I mentioned, I have a cat and when I'm laying down it's basically cuddle time for her and she is a possessive type plus the puppy loves to lick faces and I won't have that going on while I try to sleep. I just want to know how to get her to not whine at my door - and her owner keeps the bedroom door open so the puppy can get to the main part of the house so I don't think I'll be allowed to shut her door.

First let me say that it sounds like you've been very patient and the dog's owner doesnt sound very responsible. I've operated a boarding kennel and in my experience the best thing to do for any dog is to take the time and properly crate train them (and i use the term "crate" but it can be any sort of space/enclosure that works for you and the dog). When introduced properly, crates not only provide the dog with the security of their own space (..just watch them head right for it if they've been caught doing something they know they're not supposed to..) but there's a safety issue too if you are letting your puppy roam the house when everyone's asleep or when you go out. Also, if you've got a houseful of guests (especially little kids) some dogs are relieved to not have to deal with them and when visiting other people's homes the crate makes bringing your dog less stressful for everyone. I hope that you can talk the dog's owner in to investigating the whole crate/kennel thing because you will ALL benefit from it. Good luck.

This only happened last night, and I don't think that was what she wanted because there are weekends when she is away and the dog is always out in the rest of the house unless her owner is here and in her bedroom.

I don't mind so much except when I am trying to sleep and of course with my cat - the dog is in my room right now and my cat has got the funniest look on her face since the cat is larger than the dog and she's trying to figure out is this really a dog or not - and the dog does follow me when I'm out of the bedroom but she's a good watchdog to since she'll bark and I know someone who isn't usually here is at the door.

You make a dog to stop whining at my door by teaching it to be obedience or improving its general confidence. Sometimes the dog may be behaving this way because he has separation anxiety. You may also take the dog to a vet for further check up.

I ain't taking this dog to the vet! I can't even afford my own cat's vet care - aside from the exam cost - and the dog isn't mine.

I think she may have been whining because I suddenly found a slug coming up from under those boards along the wall by the door - my cat kept staring there and turning the light on I saw it but it got out under the door so I ran to get the salt and now I can't hear the dog scratching at the door of her master's bedroom because I shut her in there after asking this since I finally said to hell with my getting in trouble for shutting the door, I wanted sleep.

I won't put a shock collar on someone's pet unless they put it on themselves!

You're right. Sorry. I misread the question. In that case, there is a sonic emitting device that can be bought from off the TV. Wish that I could remember the name of the product. Google it. You can use it to silence the other person's mutt.

Your being too nice. The owner is getting a good nights rest as you have to mess with this dog. I'd push it into the owners room and shut the door. When the owner asks why. I'd tell them it's keeping me awake. It's not my dog and not my responsibility. Explain you'll keep doing it til the dog stops trying to get into your room and whining. There's nothing wrong with doing that. People need to take care of their own pets.

It happened that 1 night and I did finally just drop her off and shut the door as quickly as I could - little dog so she can get out small openings - and apologized in the morning if I'd waken the woman up since the door did shut loudly but it didn't wake her. She usually does keep the door shut but I guess the door got left open and the puppy came to my room, she loves to cuddle with me.
