What would make my impreza gain oil

my car gains oil but does not lose antifreeze

Report as

If you are not loosing anti-freeze then you are getting gas into the oil.
Injector could be sticking. Your bearings will be wiped out quickly by either contaminating the oil.
Get it checked out ASAP!

The "Motor Oil Fairy" must like you. What did you do leave a few nuts and bolts under your car at night? : D Seriously I have no clue.

Heat-the car registers more oil when it's been running than when it's cold.

The only other thing I could think of would be water from the radiator-you do clean off the stick before checking the oil, right?

You can get your Impreza to gain oil by using tighter fitting piston rings. To ensure that your car doesn't use more oil, it's good to have it regularly serviced, so that you can replace any worn-out valve guides and cylinder walls. When these parts are faulty, more oil than is needed is introduced into the combustion chamber.
