I am trying to find a new religion, after me and my family found out our old one was a cult. Anybody know any good, and forgiving religions?

My old religion was Jehovah's witness, we didn't like it until our church made us recruit, They said if we recruited new people, we wouldn't go to hell. I want people's opinions about which one i should join. Right now, i guess we are atheist, but i can't live without faith in something.

How about having faith in yourself and your loved ones rather than relying on mythical gods as a crutch? Also, you're not atheists just because you don't belong to a church or formal religion. All evidence here indicates you believe in some form of god- that means you aren't an atheist.

It is also bizarre to "shop" for a religion, as you can't just choose to believe in things.

It all depends in what you and your family believe in.

If you don't like the recruiting part that Christianity and Islam promote as part of their faiths but still believe in the god of Abraham then Judaism is all that's left. Jews are forbidden from recruiting new members.

Really? All Believing Jews or just Orthodox?
Report as
No not all Jews are orthodox, but that doesn't have anything to do with evangelizing anyways.

To Caluvox: The reason I'm asking is there was Walter in the movie The Big Lewbowski and he was playing a gentile converting to Judaism, and I have wondered about the truth of this. If you haven't seen the movie you won't know what I'm talking about. (You may not find it funny, but it does have elements to the picture that says "cult flick".) I thought Jews DO accept gentiles that wish to convert. Are you suggesting they DO, but they just don't RECRUIT?
Report as
Yes anyone can convert to Judaism, but Jews are not allowed to go door to door, or wear signs around their necks, etc. in order to recruit new members. I think it has to do with them being the " gods chosen" and that it's up to god to do that, not them

OK Thanks for clearing that up. Learn something new everyday.

Haha... If we're lucky we do :)

I think being a baptist is pretty awesome. All you have to do is ask god into your heart and you are forgiven of all sin. You don't have to recruit anyone.

Well that's good you got out. It does sound a bit cultish. I still suggest a Christian denomination. I recommend researching the Catholic, Lutheran, and Protestant denominations.

Put your faith in your deity, not human beings and their religions. They are all cults, really.

Try Nondenominational. They believe in Jesus and you do NOT have to WORK your way to heaven. It is by grace... A free gift.

I suggest a good non-denominational church that concentrates on God and the Bible rather than denominational dogma. Congrats on getting away from the JWs by the way and watch out for Mormon recruiters. Theyre just as agressive and just as cultish as the JWs.

Don't come to ask.com for this. My religion forbids recruiting people, so I can't help with that, but I suggest you look into it, and decide for yourself. Coming here will just get a lot of people to endorse their own religion. Try going to different services of different religions, and learning some texts, and find out which one you like best. Good luck.

Well as much as I have blasphemed many cherished beliefs held by Christians, I will say that Christianity might actually be the way to go. Contradictory? Yes and No. Apparently all you have to do is accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and that pretty much is it. All you have to do is confess this in your heart and this confession NEED NOT BE PUBLIC. The Holy Spirit will then find you. WARNING: If you expect some sort of orgasmic bliss to suddenly come upon you, you are going to be VERY disappointed. If you want to be soldier for God (read Jesus) then expect to go through training that will make the Navy Seal training look like Romper Room. Remember: Satan tempted Jesus (THE Son of God) for apparently 40 days out in the "desert". You take up that Cross and follow Him, you too, will be giving the Devil his due. (And more than likely it is going to be a lot longer than 40 days. It could be 40 months or 40 years! If you are offered the "Forbidden Fruit" and decide to take another bite? Hmm, "Buckle up your seat belt Dorthy, cuz Kansas? Its going bye bye" Dramatic? Perhaps.

The "Navy Seals" will understand if you wan't to "ring that bell" If you can dig the metaphor. Life goes on.

Don't let everything I have said in my initial response scare you buddy. Remember all you have to do is accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Let me repeat: THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO! The problem developes when your ego gets a little too inflated. You start "Bible Thumpin" or booking people on unnecessary "guilt trips", then someone like me might come along and throw a wrench in the works if you can dig what I'm saying. One last piece of advice if you choose to take it. Remember to pray for MERCY instead of JUSTICE! Why? Cuz if you aint a LAWYER, you may find yourself on the RECEIVING END of Justice (Ouch.)

Thank you for leaving the JWs. It is a major cult.
If you are wanting to go to the "religion salad bar" where you can pick and choose a religion that meets your qualifications, I'm afraid I can't help you. Your job is not to search for a nice religion. It's to search for the true one. They can't all be true.
I have found the God of the Bible to be overwhelmingly loving and forgiving. God loves you. He always has. He always will.
Comment if you have any questions.

Christian nondenominational teaches straight from the bible. They are mostly called Fellowship bible churches. I left Catholicism and joined Christianity about 5 years ago. I have matured so much in the faith. I'm not a babe in Christ anymore.

I would suggest looking for a church that mirrors the church that Jesus set up when he was on the earth!

I believe that being a Christian is the way to go. I really think that having the Holy Spirit in your heart will help you when your in need and even when your not. Having God in my life is probably the only reason I'm still on this earth today. A time came in my life when I drifted from God and hated to go to church. I felt as if no one liked me and I didn't deserve God. Also at school things weren't better. I was bullied because I was bigger and I didn't "fit in" with the cool crowd. But one night while I was helping my mom drop my grandma off at her apartment she had me go inside and she gave her bible and said that she had felt a sudden urge that she needed to give it to me. Also she said that she had highlighted and wrote down some verses. When I got home I looked them all up and started to cry. It was exactly what I needed. At that moment I felt as if I had a friend sitting there with me for the first time in a long time and ever since then that feeling has never left. So if you truly want to feel that you'll always have a friend with you then I believe that Christianity is the way to go. God Bless you with your decision.
