What happened to the "sponge" that was used for contraception back in the 80's?

Was it taken off the market?

It was taken off the market then put back on. Part of the problem was women forgetting to remove them and getting infections. Another problem was they could get stuck and be difficult to take out. Here is a link with some info from a trusted source on birth control. http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/birth-control-sponge-today-sponge-4224.htm

Thanks but I don't need birth control anymore. I wondered if any studies had been done. What kinds of infections? Just yeast? Was it linked to cervical cancer? I wondered if it could have contributed in addition to other known factors.

All I remember is they were taken off the market but I don't remember why.

They were nasty, I never let a girlfriend of mine insert foreign objects in her. No pill, no problem. I took care of it.
