What does it mean to "get over yourself"?

I'm having a hard time understanding the statement. Does it mean to stop caring about what others think of you and continue to live your life even if others are going to judge you regardless of what it is you're doing? Does it mean to stop thinking highly of yourself? And is there anything wrong with thinking highly of yourself especially when others think so lowly of you? I feel like I've gotten over myself in ways that I thought I never would, but I still do think highly of myself, but what's wrong with loving who I am? I don't think I'm better than other people and I try not to judge, but sometimes it's inescapable. I know I'm not perfect and there is room for more change, but is there something wrong with not letting what others think of me bring me down? I just don't understand the statement anymore.

But how is thinking highly of myself effecting anyone around me?

They may feel that you are bragging, or suggesting that they are not as good as you.

So wouldn't that mean that the people that feel like someone is bragging need to get over themselves as well? They shouldn't care what "I" think about myself if it's not even effecting their lives at all, right? It's not like "I" go around shouting to the public what I think about them or publicly put down others to assassinate their character or ruin their reputation with what I think about myself compared to them. I just don't understand the statement because I feel that it could just turn into a vicious cycle.

I'm not saying that you are doing anything wrong.
The real problem is that you may be doing something that they do not like without knowing it, or that they may be resentful of whatever you are doing.

When does this usually happen?

When people are insecure? I'm not sure what you're asking.

Relax, drop the ego and/or ease up with the arrogance and self centeredness. Also it means everything doesn't revolve around you.
