Why did God make hell? Why doesn't he prove himself real?

Obviously people are going to fight and have religious debates, if GOD isn't gunna prove himself. And OBVIOUSLY not 100% of the world's population isn't going to be christian, because there is no proof of a christian God, so why torture them forever? That's just messed up. So why would he make Hell knowing not everyone will be christian. It says in one of the 10 commandments that you can only believe in the christian god and no other gods, so are all other religions going to hell? :(

@Bobby: You make it sound like even though God made hell for Satan and his demons, he is powerless to prevent others from going there. You make it sound like God is sitting on his throne saying, "Oh, no! That's not what I wanted to happen. Well, THAT was a mistake."
Report as
Nop. God just loves us enough for us to want to volunterily love Him and Worship Him----called Free will!
Report as
CalTex, God is not powerless to prevent others from going to hell. He made a way out for everyone! Your choice whether you take it or not. It's a free gift, IF YOU RECEIVE it.
Report as
@MarSch: "A way out" implies that one has a way of getting out of hell once there. That is also known as "redemption". Redemption is not what your God is offering according to his believers. What believers in this god are saying is that God is telling his creation to believe in him without using the brains he gave us to look for physical proof, and then when the proof is finally presented, it is too late to do anything about it. This one reason I am no longer a believer. No god which supposedly touts itself as being infinitely and perfectly just, loving, and wise would engage in such irrational behavior.
Report as
Well, I can't help what "believers in this god are saying", but since God created EVERYTHING, He can make up any requirements He likes! Offering the way out by asking His Son for forgiveness is the way out of having to go to hell. But many are too arrogant and think God has to PROVE Himself to them. Like beating their chests against the thunderstorm... He ALREADY proved it through His Son. And creation. And He's proven Himself to all who sincerely ask Him into their lives. So that we don't suddenly get into the evolution theory, that theory does not necessarily exclude God. I've heard some say, "God spoke, and BOOM it happened." :-)
Report as
I wonder - how is it that people who shake their fist at God, demanding that He prove Himself to them, curse Him, ridicule those who believe in Him, talk as if they know Him, exclaim His powerlessness, ignore Him, laugh even at the idea of Him, and on and on... How can they even imagine that since God is loving - and even though He has provide the way at much expense to Him - that He should NOT send them to Hell, because no matter what, if He was loving, He should bring them into Heaven. ???

Beats me.

Report as
@MarSch: If, as you say, people are shaking their fists at God, cursing him, demanding he prove himself, talk as if they know him, exclaim his powerlessness, ignore him, and laugh at him, then they should go to hell. All those behaviors you listed could only be attributed to those who either believe and turn their backs, or suspect God exists, but aren't willing to try to know him. How can those who do not think he exists do any of those things? We don't don't think he exists, so how can we shake our fists and something that doesn't exist? I was a devout and happy theist for about 55 or my 62 years of living. I did the due diligence of getting to know him and studying the Bible, and living my life with the understanding of what God wanted. But eventually, after asking one too many questions without a rational answer, I had to admit to myself that I was simply responding to social and familial conditioning. I was like the child who eventually comes face-to-face with the realization that Santa Clause is just something other people told me was real. So I am not exclaiming God's powerlessness any more than that child exclaims the powerlessness of that which does not exist. The concept of God only has as much power as is given to that concept by those who believe the concept is reality.

And I do not ridicule anyone who believes unless that belief is doing harm -- like dumbing down education of our youth, or preventing people from having access to a civil right. Certainly I will debate the reasoning people have for believing to the extent they are willing to debate. That is because religion -- all religions and similar concepts -- is a life-long interest for me. It seems to be a hard sell here on Ask.com, but debating is not the same as arguing or being mean-spirited.

Well, CalTex, I am truly sorry for your lousy experience you've had concerning God and religion. I really am. I see too many (even one is too many) people that have been burned or burned out. For instance, I've been a Christian for over 30 years and I've belonged to some absolutely wonderful churches, but I have not been in church except a could of times in almost 2 years. Has anyone called from the church? Unfortunately no. Hurts. Not a good thing. And I had a few acquaintances there that have not checked on me either. That's really dropping the ball.
However, my relationship is with Jesus, not that particular church, and I've tried very hard to keep that up. I'm even getting little pushes to start looking for a new church home, where love and support abounds... But I can sure see where some people are coming from. Although those people in that church more or less ignored my absence (as if it didn't matter whether I was there or not), Jesus always stayed near. Always.
Again - I am sorry for your disappointment with it all, but I kind of understand. I hope you find your way okay, CalTex. Blessings to you.
Report as
@MarSch: Where did I say I had a disappointing experience? In fact, I said I was a "devout and happy theist" for far longer than you have been. Nothing bad happened to turn me against God or religion. I had wonderful experiences with my fellow theists. I still feel a connection to the believers I associated with. They were absolutely wonderful people and I was fortunate to call them friends. Those were often a very uplifting times in my life and I am a better person for those experiencs. But there came a point, after much study, praying, and searching amongst all the various religions in the world, when I just could not, in good conscience, continue to say I believed God was real.

off course not all the other believers are going to hell. Our God is only 1 God in every religion no matter how we think of him to be, therefore by the end we all believe in him in a different way that we learned from our family's. I don't think God will punish people for worshiping him in a different way that he wanted but he would punish who deny his power and existence. Hell was made for the none believers then for the believers to have their share as a punishment for the things they have done wrong like drinking, gambling, sex .. etc. The christian God is the same God in Jewdisoum and Islam they was people believe in him to be is different thats all.

You miss the point that he made entirely- as in how does anyone (unbelievers included) deserve eternal torment just for believing differently?

Besides, your answer is completely incorrect scripturally- your scriptures say everyone who does not "accept Jesus" is going to hell- that's everyone except Christians.
Report as
Yeah, but it also says Jesus is loving. In that cognitive disconnect battle, sometimes Jesus as Loving Father Figure wins, and sometimes, Jesus as Evil Dictator wins.
Report as
When man first rebelled (disobeyed) God in the Garden of Eden, that sin was passed down from generation to generation, and all would be "kicked out" of His Presence from then on. However, God loved us so much, He did not want that to happen, so all along He had a plan - to offer His Son to pay the penalty that you and I deserved, and all others, too, so that we could be reunited again with God. He carried this out completely, and the only requirement was to receive His present to us (that's His Son) so we could join in with Him. Many, many don't want to do this, even thought God wants ALL to be saved. Many dont' WANT to believe. Many haven't heard - but they can tell there's a God just by looking at the earth and the sky, so they have no excuse. So God offered ALL of us a way out, and He made hell for Satan and his demons. However, if we don't join God, there's no other place for us to go, except with Satan, who is called the prince of this world.

I respect your curiosity, but I choose not to answer my opinion in this, as it always ends up in a heated debate, because people are so passionate in what they believe and disbelieve. I saw a question similar to this a while back, and one person in particular that I am surprised has not written argued with everybody on this site.....and weeks later was still commenting when nobody was even interested in him or his foolishness any longer.....I being one of them. I will say that I have my beliefs, am passionate about them as is the next person, and know where I am going....and I do know it isn't hell.

He doesnt prove Himself real because He doesnt have to. Proof is everywhere you look, people simply choose to ignore it. God wants us to believe by faith. If people choose to ignore the vast amount of proof He has given us already that is their personal choice.
Hell is where ever satan is. Not sure it was 'made' so much as just existing as heaven just exists. And people will go there by choice thru choosing satan rather than God. God does not send people to hell. We are all given a choice and clear consequences for each. Personal accountability. We are each responsible for our own choice and what happens after. God also offers heaven and each of us is just as free to choose that. Any one who ends up un hell has onky themselves to blame. They had another choice.
Why should God allow people into His heaven who spent their lives not just ignoring Him and His son, but bashing them and persecuting His followers? Absolutely no reason. Why should the ultimate prize be given to the losing team, especially when nearly everyone on it chose that team deliberately despite being told ahead of time that it would lose? No reason whstsoever. The winning team gets the prize and the loosing team doesnt. Thats real life. You want the prize you get on the winning team.

Hell was never intended for man. But if a person rejects Jesus Christ, thereby rejecting heaven, then that person must accompany Satan forever. God gives us a choice, either eternal life with Him or eternal suffering with the devil. You would think that it would be an easy choice for people to make, but, unfortunately, many people reject Jesus Christ and God's offer of heaven.
And God will not force heaven or Jesus on anyone. There will not be one person in heaven who did not want to be there. So if a person chooses to reject Christ, that person has chosen hell for himself or herself. God did not send them there. Sadly, there are going to be a whole lot of people in hell, even so-called nice people. So many in fact that hell had to be enlarged! Isaiah 5:14, "Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure."
God died on the cross for your sins to make a way for you to get to heaven. If you reject His free gift, there is no one to blame but yourself. It has been said that the door of hell is locked from the inside.http://www.jesusisthelight.net/HELLISREAL.htm#2

Your question is pretty much verbatim the thought process I went through to become atheist. Religion thrives on the social identity theory of "US vs THEM". If Christians admitted that Muslims would be as likely to go to Heaven, and if Muslims admitted that Christians WOULDN'T burn forever as Infidels, there wouldn't be as much OOMPH behind their theologies. In its later stages of UvT, even different flavors of BAPTIST become convinced that the other flavors are Hell-bound.

If you can think of a way to get all these people suffering from illogical zealotry to stop, it'd be great.

Hell is the consolation of Christianity; "the glad tidings of great joy", the justice of its God, and the mercy of the compassionate Christ. All the meanness, all the revenge, all the cruelty and all the hatred of which man’s heart is capable, grew, blossomed and bore fruit in this one word, Hell.

Infinite punishment is infinite cruelty, endless injustice, and immortal meanness. Hell makes God the insane keeper of a mad house - the basest being in the universe - the warden of an eternal penitentiary. To worship an eternal jailer ought to harden, debase, and pollute even the vilest soul. A man who believes in hell & doesn't go insane has the heart of a snake & the conscience of a hyena.

In thousands of orthodox sermons I heard the most fearful and vivid descriptions of the tortures in hell, and came to deny with all my strength, and despise with every drop of my blood, this infinite lie. I said: "Hell is a lie. And, if it is true, I hate your God." I make my choice now. If a God will roast his children forever, I'd rather go to hell than to go to heaven & keep the society of such a savage. For me, nothing could add to the horror of hell, except the presence of its creator God.

God did not create he'll, because he'll is not real. Translators have allowed their personal beliefs to color their work instead of being consistent in their rendering of the original-language words. For example: (1) The King James Version rendered she’ohl? as “hell,” “the grave,” and “the pit”; hai?des is therein rendered both “hell” and “grave”; ge?en·na is also translated “hell.” (2) Today’s English Version transliterates hai?des as “Hades” and also renders it as “hell” and “the world of the dead.” But besides rendering “hell” from hai?des it uses that same translation for ge?en·na. (3) The Jerusalem Bible transliterates hai?des six times, but in other passages it translates it as “hell” and as “the underworld.” It also translates ge?en·na as “hell,” as it does hai?des in two instances. Thus the exact meanings of the original-language words have been obscured.

The Bible says "The soul that is sinning, it itself will die." Not "punished forever." (Ezekiel 18:4)

Hope I helped!

Satan is effectively in control of the world and heavenly places TODAY. Just look around if you are in doubt. The newspaper, the television,? this is not my Father?s world! It is not the way he has designed it. Look what Ephesians 6:12 says about today. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." And in Ephesians 2:2 God says: "Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:" In Luke 4:5-8, the devil offers Jesus Christ the kingdoms of this world. Christ does not deny that Satan has these kingdoms. You see this world and even the heavens are a mess because they are in the hands of the deceiver, the Devil. He effectively is in control of heaven and earth.

I usually hear that hell is because some humans who don't want anything to do with God so He is just giving them what they want: separation from Him. And you can guess what happens when you're separated from the source of all good in the world.
I believe God doesn't just prove Himself real because He wants us to genuinely choose to love Him. He gave us enough evidence that, if we truly are open to finding Him, we will. And that's showing love for Him. If He just showed Himself, people would worship, but mostly out of fear, and everyone wouldn't really have a choice not to so you wouldn't really be loving Him, you would just be serving Him like a robot. He wants real relationships with us!
