Why do cats always land on their feet?

Report as

Cats climb a lot by nature, so it's essential for them not to get hurt if they fall off from something. They are very skilled in controlling their body, and can turn their body in mid air in order to have the legs pointing downward before they hit the ground. Because they are not very heavy and have strong flexible muscles they can absorb the impact - up to some point. If a human would do the same, it would mean to jump down from a height of 60ft or so. I'd rather not try that.

Only from a certain height...a shorter fall could cause more damage to them, they need time to adjust themselves in freefall. It's a survival skill cats have.

they have a very flexible spine that they can twist and turn. they twist the lower spine, and use it to turn the rest of the body. i have only read about this, but im sure you can find timelapse videos about it on youtube :)

Finally someone gets it factually and actually right! I just about lost my mind hehee. Thank you. Also, it is because cats jump that they land on their feet ;). Rarely cats fall, but you are absolutely right that it is their spine :) And you cited facts and sources, and your'e sane. Logical, all,. Sorry I have been having a hard crazy time of things and I lose hope when on a search engine site people are guessing and not well. Thank you for saving my sanity today ;).

They have actual reflexes that trigger there brain and tell it to activate flaps of skin called.... I forgot what they were called but the cat actually rotates in mid air and survives by landing on his or her feet. I really hope that helps(:

I heard of such a thing as something like a special kind of hair in their ears telling them they are upside down and that they need to turn around in order to land on their feet. And it could just be in some instinct of them being born with which or course that is what it would be, but just can't really think of a answer to this....

Maybe they are magic or they are so lazy they can just do it. But I'm not saying every cat is lazy just some cats are.

It's just a fast reflex that cats have basically meaning it is an instinct. :-)

Cats can all semi-fly just enough to do so because they have evolved from Nyan Cat.

Yes they do and if they have tails its their tail that balances them.
Not always. Some cats have no tails, and they flip over and land on their back A LOT!
They usually do because they are extremely flexible and land on their feet because they are able to twist in the air when falling and manage to land on their feet. But this does not happen all the time.

Cats are created to be "pouncers", to hunt from above their prey and jump swiftly. That's why their back legs have such large muscles.Their sense of proprioception (where my body is in space) is excellent and they have the best rotary righting reflex of any creature. So they can tell if their head is not in the correct position as they fall or jump (equilibrium in the inner ear) and they flip around to compensate. They also spread their legs to make their bodies form a kind of parachute to slow their fall. All works together to make for a perfect hunter.

It is their balance. The tail helps the cat balance, thus landing on it's feet.
