Why do people care so much for money and material things?

Money doesn't do anything for you... It just makes life harder and makes people more stressed... I just don't see why people want so much stuff.

Yep welcome to America.... It gets me so freakin mad that someone can spend about 500$ on a pair of sunglasses when they can use it to help people who don't even have shoes, food, a house or even parents to come home too... In the end you take nothing with you none of that will matter anymore.... You will either go to heaven or hell if that's true or you will just be a lifeless body buried in the ground....

To CaptainThorLoki: I hear you and appreciate what you are saying. Now hear me and APPRECIATE what I am saying to you in all seriousness: Find something to do NOW! Anything! Count the change hidden in the couch, weave a basket, mow a lawn, make a paperclip chain. Because where you might be at mentally is not a safe place. I do not mean this as an insult or even as a smart ass remark, but as a human as concerned as I can get for another human who I do not know and more than likely never meet in the flesh.

To CaptainThorLoki: First of all, most of us are suffering from some "instability". Secondly I might have been a little too overdramatic with my rhetoric. I was genuinely concerned because I myself have dwelt on the idea of "pointlessness" and even now being in a relatively good mood, I do not like dwelling on such an idea. In a bad mood, such thinking could lead one to levels of despair that is not healthy. Sorry if I offended you.
Report as
Aw. yes. I dont think you understood what I was saying. Im not saying life is pointless. Im saying depending on material things to get you through life is pointless.

Because money is just about the one thing that's keeping the economies as much alive as they are now.

well, money does help you get the most basic needs, but yes people are obsessed with it these days yet it cannot save a soul.

I think a lot has to do with America's obsession with celebrities. They have to wear the same clothes, have the same hairstyles, drive the same vehicles and have a big expensive home as well. I also think it's because they're shallow and don't appreciate or care for what really matters: family, friends, basic necessities and happiness(not from materials).

I was debating in my mind as to how I was going to tackle this "dusey" of a question. I still don't know what to say other than look for a clue in Abraham Maslow's "pyramid of needs". Some of the other answers on here are interesting to me as well.

Money is necessary to provide basic needs, but when those needs are meant, people can use money to try to buy happiness. This is a concept that has been ingrained in American society. Commericials on TV advertise cool, new cars, MTV cribs displays the biggest homes in America, etc.

Unforuntaly, the "happiness" from buying a new item only lasts moments, and therefore has created a culture of depressed people, who always want more THINGS.

1.) What does "unforuntaly" mean? I want one!
2.) Did you just write a bigger answer than me? DId you just give a longer answer and I give a shorter answer?

I assume you're talking about multi millionaires? I'm not wealthy but I have enough money to not worry about bills, cutting coupons to afford food, or refrain from driving the car to stretch a tank of gas. I don't have to worry about coming up with the money to buy new tires if mine get too slick. I don't have to self medicate when I'm sick but can go to the doctor. I'm comfortable and if having money makes people hate me, then I think they're just jealous they didn't have the drive and determination to be successful. I deplore people that sit on their butt and expect the govt to take care of them.

Because they think money can buy everything. So if they get money, they get everything.
