I want to gain experience working with horses, but I do not know how, any advice?

I live in the melbourne florida area and I want to gain experience with horses. I have not had any previous experience even though I am 17, turning 18 in a few months. I do not mind manual labor/scooping poop and I would really like working with horses, but I have no idea where to start. I thought about getting a job at a barn, but I do not know any and I am worried that no one would hire someone as inexperienced as I am even though I am a fast learner/ eager to work.

Many stables/farms are eager for free help :) many times they will let you ride when the work is done. There is SOO much more you can learn by working and caring for them; not just riding

But would they want to have to teach someone everything?

Alot of times they will put you with someone else so you can follow and learn...I used to volunteer at a place and I worked with the owner and she shared her knowledge with me. Now I help my trainer train my horses and sometimes get to work with other people's horses :)

Really? That would be so cool! Do you live in florida? My friend actually volunteers at this one pony party place and she's bringing me along to meet the owner to see if I can start to volunteer there too:)

Not to be creepy asking where you live, I was just asking so if I ever take you up on your offer I don't awkwardly find out you live in canada or something. Do you know any places in need of volunteers?

No I live in SC. I used to live in Tampa, but my horse connections are mostly in SC and one in GA. I know of mostly Arabians, but I also know some horses for sale

look in the phone book or the web for a horseback riding company i'm sure there should be at least one or two around your area. give them and call and they should steer you in the right direction. or even maybe a veterinarian might give you some info on a person or company that he might know that has horses

You can enroll in agricultural college ! They offer courses in anything to do with farming and farm animals including horses. plus many police forces maintain riding stables for their mounts and would probably welcome visitors eager to learn.

I am planing on becoming a vet, preferably for farm animals, I just want experience with them before college! Especially since I am planning on going straight into pre-vet. The police force down here do not use horses :(

At 17 you are almost aged out of 4-H but contact your county cooperative extension office for 4-H horse clubs near you. Spend a year as a 4-H'er and then volunteer with the club.
Talk to local barn owners/riding schools and tell them you would like to apprentice with them. Hard workers who are conscientious are always appreciated and horse owners are willing to teach them.
Don't be afraid to ask, most horse people love to share their passion!

You have to learn how to take care of one before you buy one.
