I got a pet racoon. i caught him in my yard yesterday and shoved him in a box. i was just wondering if this was ok?

i know people say they are dangerous but i love him and have already named him. i dont want to let him go. hes a great pet.

Report as

No. That is NOT okay. I suggest letting him go immediately.

It's illegal! Unless you are a licensed animal rehabilitator, you are not allowed to capture indigenous creatures and keep them! Let it go!

You can keep your pet raccoon in a cage, although they prefer being able to roam free. Raccoons are arboreal animals, so they live most of their lives in trees; they aren't really domesticated and prefer to be outdoors and roam.

I know its hard to decide with animals.. Im a sucker for them! But the only bad thing is it could have rabbies or even lyme disease. If your parent allow you to keep it you need to find a wild life vet to check him out to be on the safe side. As long as he dont bite you or scratch you it should be ok till then. Please be safe! and by the way they are scavengers. they eat whatever they can find. pizza crusts, cookies and etc.

I hate to drag out a tired old cliche, but if you love him, set him free. And after you do that, get yourself off to the nearest clinic for rabies shots

I'm a little disturbed by this back and forth, .... Don't think Daizy would approve. Is she Daizy anymore? Or Daidgy?
Report as
I had to leave it as Daizy, Nov. I tried to register Doozy instead of Dodgy but it was unavailable. But she wouldn't mind. At my age she knows it's safe to let me out to play -- I'm not capable of doing anything she wouldn't approve of.

@pop. See my comment under Cj's answer. You will be judged, by a judge. There are very few exceptions, such as pigeons, for capturing wildlife and keeping them as pets.

Raccoons, especially ones caught from the wild, don't make good pets. They're clever and they're escape artists. Their front paws are as good as hands and they can work many kinds of latches. When they get loose, they're destructive. When they grow up and develop a sex drive and a need to assert their territory, they get ill tempered and downright nasty. Call fish and game and have it taken away and released in the wild.

how do you know?
Report as
Because I read and learn. Wild animals NEVER make good pets; all their self-survival instincts tell them to escape, and if they have to hurt you to do that, they will.
Report as
so if it were around my daughter....
Report as
She could get scratched, bitten, quite severely. And if the animal was easy to catch, it might be sick. Raccoons aren't big enough to "eat" someone, but they are clever and determined, and they want to be free. They do what they have to.

no they are wild animals that dont have alot of fear of humans and will probably bite you or try to when he gets out. if you do keep it and get him use to you it will go through all your stuff and take what it wAnts and if you dont like it to bad its going to do whay it wants and if you try to stop it it will challenge you

okay, they are cute looking. but they can be dangerous, and wild raccoons carry diseases. serious diseases. contact animal control and let them release it.

How about you take a few pictures with it, feed it some garbage, tell all your secrets to it, become best buddies, have fun with it for years, write a book about the experience, mourn when the raccoon dies, and become an animal rights activist. Die happy, financially secure,( from the book) and wise.

Racoons are very inteligent. He's going to chew a hole in the box and get out. Please let the racoon go ! They can destroy your house in no time. They will chew electric wires, crawl in your walls and through the vents. Not to mention what it can do to you and your family.

If you want to keep him give him a friend. This may sound crazy but pick a room in your house plant a tree and put the friend in the room with the raccoon.

But the raccoon is not ok

no especially not a racoon used to being in the wild. you are taking away from his home his family and his way of living. and he will not just love he will do his best to get away from you and he can very easily hurt you if provoked. trapping him is provoking.

it is perfectly fine pet if you find it when it is young if it is matured it will be feral and will not be domesticatable. you should let it loose if it is old. when feeding a pet racoon get a bowl of cheerios no milk. then a bowl of milk no cheerios. the racoon will wash the cheerios in the milk before eating like they do in the wild. its an okay pet. do not be worried. get vaccinations. my mother had a racoon when she was younger and loved it
