"Bloody Mary", is the nickname given to Mary I of England because she reinstituted the heresy laws of England and attempted to bring Catholicism back by the sword. A poor choice of execution overall. She signed the death warrants of about 300 protestants. This earned her the title "Bloody Mary". Though this is an interesting fact that is often overlooked. The term "Bloody Elizabeth" or "Bloody Henry VIII", would have been far more appropriate, as in each case, both Henry and Elizabeth slaughtered 2-3 times as many Catholics during their individual reigns as Mary did Protestants. So really, what Mary did was tame when compared to the drastic persecutions that Henry and Elizabeth put in place.
