What Is the Best Caliber Handgun for Self Defense?

Report as
jsm36

Way too objective, Dude. Concealed, home defense? Bigger the better but, in whose hand?(experience, recoil etc.) Shotgun maybe?!

Yeah, Joe Biden says all we need is shotgun and we all know what an expert he is.

Joe "shoot through the door" Biden... HA!

My biggest problem with his shotgun remark was 'double-barrel'. I like a little more firepower, and that distinctive 'chu-chink' of a pump. Plus, shotguns aren't a good CCW choice-

Josh, if I can suggest, don't go with the cheapest CCW instructor you find. My guy, God luv him, was terrible. I learned nothing, and I have much to learn. But for $65 I got my permit. Ask around and look for NRA certified.

Oh I already know the place to get it lol

I would not use that method.

He was speaking of how useless a .25 was,and make sure you have the right tool for the job...You don't want someone taking it away from you and well...you know....

I recommend a 9mm, it has enough stopping power to take something down, but its recoil isn't too bad, and it isn't too bulky, they are usually fairly accurate as well.

You are 15! How can you 'recommend' anything concerning firearms?
Report as
15 or not, my weapons expertise is pretty extensive, I am fully proficient with multiple types of firearms and bladed weapons. Plus the fact that both my parents were Marines, and I have a fairly good basis of consultation from them as well. You really could try being more polite.
Report as
We're talking about life, not Call of Duty.

Maybe in 6 years when you can own a pistol, you can attempt to impress us with all you don't know about real firearms.
Report as
My Barretta 92 can hit the wings off a bee. And it doubles as a brick when you run out
Report as
Orkamemnon, I hate call of duty, and I don't even own a video game system, you should probably shut your mouth when you really have no idea what my life experience is.

I've got a Ruger P89 that would do the same. Ouch!
Report as

And Preppy, caliber has nothing to do with accuracy. That's in quality of the gun, and who's shooting it.
Report as
Love my 92, but nothing beats my G23 for everyday carry

Okra, think you hit a nerve. lmao!
Report as
You're 15.... What "Experience" can you have?

"My parents were Marines...", how does that qualify you? You're ignorance is insulting.
Report as
no, yours is. You really have no idea how much combat training I've been through, and as I said, I consult with my two extremely qualified parents regularly.
Report as
the fact that you discriminate based upon age shows a very shallow personality fraught with insecurity on your part.
Report as
If you disagree with my personal choice of weapon, then state your case for disagreement, but stop making an @ss of yourself.

Or does being a Singer/Poet/Martial Artist/Street-fighter qualify you?

Report as
Just come off it kid and stop posing... There are better ways than making crap up.
Report as
You know, if we were to meet face to face, you really wouldn't be speaking that way to me. Oh well, I suppose I can't fix the problems that lie in the issue of ageism, if you continue to underestimate someone because of what their age is, or what they put on a public forum, you will most likely go on to regret it. I suppose I'll just allow karma to do it's job.

Kid, your initial post, hours ago, about hollow-points being armour-piercing, shows you have much to learn. I appreciate your love of firearms, and your parents service. But please..
Report as
having something to learn does not make one have no knowledge, and it does not excuse your initial behavior, you made the mistake of automatically assuming someone is an idiot based upon a single screw-up.
Report as
I like Tollhouse Cookies. If you overcook them they make excellent projectiles. If Joe Bidens wife is shooting at you with a shotgun, you can bean her with a cookie. Also they will usually make it through airport security.

Depending on the application, I prefer the 45 Auto. It has more than enough stopping power and low velocity which cuts down on over penetration. It is expensive to practice with, and takes a fair amount of practice to shoot well, so if funds are low this is probably not your best bet. 9MM has served as a very useful and successful self defense round. Plus it is very cheap to buy ammunition for so you can get a lot more practice in. It is also a light recoil round and its magazine capacity in most handguns far surpasses that of the 45 Auto. A little more info on the application would be helpful but I hope the info I have given you helps.

That's a much more complex question than it seems. So I'll give a few basics... If you aren't an accomplished shooter, stick with a Revolver, they're simple & don't jam. .357/38 is an excellent calibre if you buy good self defense ammunition.

I carried a S&W .357 for years. Excellent weapon. (for home defense, stick with a shotgun. Remington 870 is an excellent choice.)

I love my 9mm, 16 round magazine and it is NOT high capacity, I don't like to have an empty gun when I'm feeling less than perfect

I like .357 but a semi auto is more easily concealed so maybe 9 MM.

For personal protection I am a big fan of the Taurus Judge. Course, a lady never leaves home without her 1911 45 cal either!
